I love most fonts. Context of course makes a difference, but variety is the spice of life. I always thought Papyrus and Underwood especially appealing. Joker, Chiller, and Wingdings too for sheer fun and zaniness. But there are zillions, and most of them a have a interesting story.

You've pretty well laid it out there, mate. I must admit that I had never picked up on that, but then I don't/haven't built from that era. To me it looks like a rounded US Amarillo font. Mike @72modeler, any thoughts?

There is an Armadillo font, but it's nothing like the Air Force lettering, which is similar to, but not quite the same as, Amarillo (same name as a city in Texas). I agree with Georgio that the rounded countours were probably hand painted after the stencil application.

Looks sort of like the stencil gaps have been filled in- especially on the 'WW' tailcode, but IIRC, the USAF Amarillo font characters are not rounded, but are angular. Could there be a similar font used for USAF vehicles, APU';s, etc. and tat is what was used on the F-105 fin in question? Me, I'm still trying to figure out the intricacies of RAF roundel types!

I don't think 'Amarillo' is the official name. As far as I can tell, the guy that made a TTF of it named it such. Same goes for 'Longbeach' for the US Navy style font. I try to avoid using these fake names.

When I am making up decals for AF vehicles, I use the Blue Highway font for the blue and 24052 colored vehicles. For the camo ones I go with Overspray. Just about all of the characters are stenciled. As I remember it, lower case gives a crisp character and upper case gives a slightly blemished character that looks like it has a little bit of overspray, hence the name. Looking over the two fonts just now, Overspray would be the one to get. It is available as a free download and is a true type font.

Those numbers may have not been applied freehand but could maybe be the result of a set of stencils made at unit level, based on the standard font but altered for some reason. In any case they make for an interesting variation for a model.

I spoke to a professional comic book letterer. He told me these fonts were created by a Vari-Typer machine (if anyone knows what that is). Looks like some form of Microgramma to me too. Thanks for the feedback!

I am working on making some custom decals to build some ND ANG aircraft. I have noticed that there are differences in the font the ND ANG (and other ANG units as well) used for the serial numbers on the tail vs. the standard USAF Amarillo font. Note in particular that the 2 and 7 are considerably different. Is anyone aware of what this modified Amarillo font is and is there a TTF of it anywhere?

The 1970s was a time of social change and political unrest. The hippie movement, Watergate scandal, Vietnam War protests, and many other milestones in American history happened during this decade. It also had a great influence on culture, including the arts. 0852c4b9a8
