The Resistance needs you healthy to fight for our democracy and human rights. That means, first and foremost, take care of you. Every day.
Start with the basics. Dialectic behavioral therapy uses the acronym PLEASE to help us remember them.
See a doctor when necessary. Take prescribed medication.
Don’t eat too much or too little. Eat regularly and mindfully throughout the day. Avoid food that makes you feel like bad. And, of course, eat plenty of bananas.
Keep away from illicit drugs, and use alcohol in moderation (if at all). This may sound like a total buzzkill, however a numbed out, dazed-and-confused public plays right into Trump’s hand. Drunk or high, we the people are checked out, less effective, unable to react, or prone to react stupidly. Our senses become dulled. To fight back with our full might, we need to be at our best – awake and alert.
Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night, or at least the amount of sleep that helps you feel good. Keep to a consistent sleep schedule, especially when having difficulty sleeping. Never pick up your phone for scrolling when you experience insomnia. Try a book instead, or listen to a free bedtime story on Insight Timer.
Do some sort of exercise every day. Try to build up to 50 minutes of exercise most days.
