However, for the 15th year in a row, the Department of Homeland Security and industry leaders from around the country have come together in an effort to help keep Americans safe on the internet. NCSAM 2018 is a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online while increasing the resiliency of the Nation during cyber-threats.

Some of the tips for 2018 that The National Cybersecurity Alliance offer to those of us surfing the web include:

Beware of emails that come from unknown sources:

• Cyber-criminals have become savvy in the way they attempt to lure people into giving them private information. Any email you receive from an unknown source could be malware, spam, or a phishing attempt for information.

Shopping Online:

• The NCA wants us all to be careful when and where we make our online purchase. We should always be alert to the site we are shopping on, be sure we aren’t being switched to a page that isn’t secure before we enter our credit or debit card information, and making sure that the business we are purchasing from is a legit business. And never, ever make a purchase if it can be helped over a public or open Wi-Fi connection.

Data Backup:

• We all do it. We save all of our family photos, important documents, and payment information on our personal computers. Even if we aren’t putting it out there on the World Wide Web that data can be stolen as well, due to malware and phishing scams. The NCA advises that we back up our information to an external device and to store it in a safe place to safeguard that information from cybercriminals.
