I first learned how to canoe and backpack with the Girl Scouts. While I had canoed with my family, Girl Scout camp was the first time that I didn’t have my older brothers telling me what to do. My first backpacking experience was with my Cadette Troop, near Harper's Ferry, West Virginia: it was November and it was COLD! While I don't have any good photos of those adventures, I did find my GS backpack when we were cleaning out my parents' house. Check out that bright yellow!
Over the next 30 years, I used my canoeing skills to navigate coastal rivers in Maryland and New Jersey. My backpack stayed in my parents’ gear closet, although I continued to enjoy car camping and day hikes in the Shenandoah, Adirondack and White Mountains on the East Coast, as well as the Central Cascades and Oregon Coast.
I took my canoeing skills to the next level in 2015 by taking a group of Cadettes to Northern Lakes Canoe Base in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, near Ely, MN. We spent 5 days and 4 nights, without cell service, paddling, portaging and wilderness camping. I took a second group of Girl Scouts to the BWCA in 2019.
My eldest brother rekindled my interest in backpacking with a weeklong trip to Kings Canyon in California. Since then, we’ve explored the Sawtooth Mts (ID), the Eagle Cap Wilderness (OR), and the Enchanted Valley (Olympic National Park).
When I was growing up, I also enjoyed ice skating and downhill skiing. While I’ve kept up with the skating as an adult (adding Rollerblading to the mix), my snow sports have transitioned to cross country skiing and snowshoeing. As part of our local Service Unit’s Winter Weekend at Suttle Lake, I’ve chaperoned the snow shoeing and tubing adventures.
I’ve lived in Corvallis for almost 30 years. During that time, I got married, raised two Lifetime Girls Scouts, and took my dogs on many hikes in the forests surrounding Corvallis. I am Small Craft Safety and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certified. I have experience planning Girl Scout hiking, camping and canoe adventures. I enjoy taking Scouts out in the woods and on the water.
