I grew up in the desert southwest of Arizona and New Mexico. My outdoor play as a youth was swimming, waterskiing, hiking “exploring” and horseback riding. In 1987 I moved to Portland, Oregon and quickly fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, except for the COLD water that fell from the sky and all the waterways were too COLD to swim in!

I became a Girl Scout Leader for a troop of Brownies in 2009. The Brownies curriculum at that time was “Try it,” and boy did my daughter, and the troop like to “Try it!” Through Girl Scouting I was introduced to canoeing for the first time, then kayaking. Two years later I became trained in Small Crafty Safety to provide my troop and Service Unit with the opportunity for canoeing and kayaking experiences as well. As a family, the “Try it” mentality had us take whitewater kayak lessons and we began to play more and more in the whitewater than the occasional trip down the rivers in a raft with an outfitter. When I discovered “dry suits” that was a game changer for me!

Learning about “proper outdoor gear” for the activity led me to push my outdoor recreation from summer paddling, hiking and backpacking into the shoulder seasons of the Fall and Spring. Ultimately, I challenged myself to get trained in snow camping.

I loved the opportunity Girl Scouts provided for me to progress with my girl scouts from sleeping in unit houses to cabins to tent camping to backpacking. COVID presented my troop with the challenge and opportunity as seniors and ambassadors to stay outdoors. My troop focused on new skill development in cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and then snow camping. My troop has since bridged to adults.

It has been my privilege watching the confidence of girls and adults grow as they stretch themselves in any outdoor challenges. I would love to share my experiences and training to help your troop and/or adult volunteers with any progression necessary for a successful outdoor adventure. I am also willing to be the shadow adult with the needed qualifications for outdoor adventures. I have a garage of gear available to loan to assure there are no limitations to girl scouts venturing into the outdoors.
