The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) was established in 1948 following the UN’s establishment in 1946. It was established as a non-profit organization to work as part of the UN’s initiative of peace cooperation. Its remit was to advocate, monitor, and promote mental health and world peace. It is the earliest established international organization in the mental health field and one of the UN's advisory groups.
The World Mental Health Day (WMHD) was initiated by the former Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter of WFMH, aiming to make mental health promotion a public issue, and break down the stigma of mental health. The WFMH has planned annual activities on special themes and has raised public awareness, such as proposing educational programs and through public press conferences. Every country has paid to the campaign. At the same time, the former first lady of United States, Rosalynn Smith Carter, was fully supported by the Carter center and held the global women leadership summit to advocate mental health. After that, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the World Mental Health Day on 10 October.
The theme of 2019 World Mental Health Day is Suicide Prevention. Please refer to: https://reurl.cc/mQ4m9
