You will begin with a randomly selected microbiome. You will experience some random changes to your microbiome based on your environment, food choices, or experiences.
Open the data table below to record the number and types of "bugs" that make up your starting microbiome.
Open the data table in a new window by hovering over the top right corner and clicking the icon. Make a copy using this link.
Spin Microbiome Spinner #2 to find out what kind of disruptions happen to your microbiome. You'll need to spin it at least 4 times. Record the outcomes of your spins on the data table.
We will measure a health-promoting metabolite, Butyrate.
How much Butyrate does your microbiome produce?
Using the number of each microbe after your last spin, give yourself:
x 2 for every blue microbe
x 3 for every orange microbe
- 1 for every green microbe (it inhibits production of Butyrate by blue & orange)
0 for each gray microbe. It does not produce Butyrate.
For example, if you ended with 6 blue microbes after Spin 4, you would write 12 (6 x 2) in the first column of your data table.
What's so great about Butyrate?
Watch The Hungry Microbiome.
Let's try the simulation again. This time you choose your starting microbiome.
Remember, Butyrate is good for your gut so try to maximize butyrate production. Which will you choose? Why?
CHOOSE an impact card.
Choose one of the cards below. Record the data on your data table and repeat 4 times. You may choose the same card multiple times. You may also create your own impact card.
We will again measure a health-promoting metabolite, Butyrate.
Record your answer on your data table.
