Grow RI Native Seeds
A LORI GRANTS PROJECT
Become an RI native seed champion! Join our network to receive information, news, updates, and special seed offerings.
Grow RI Native Seeds (GRINS) is made possible in part by a grant from the RI Office of Library and Information Services using funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Our mission is to empower Rhode Islanders to grow and champion native plants via seeds, information, and programming organized by their local libraries.

View basic information about germinating and growing seeds in the GRINS library.
View species that have been added for circulation. For local availability, please contact a participating GRINS location.
The GRINS seed label collection is available on Google Slides, and can be adapted for your own use. Plant images are either public domain or licensed under Creative Commons. We thank the photographers who generously made these images available, as identified in the image credits.
Our program relies on local seed donations, and we make it easy to contribute! If you grow native plants, consider sharing your seeds to help make locally sourced native seeds freely available to all.
Criteria
Species must be native to Ecoregion 59 (which contains the state of Rhode Island.) We use Go Botany to make this determination.
Parent plants must be straight species, not a cultivar.
How to Donate
Fill out a GRINS Seed Donation Form for each batch of seeds.
Drop off your seeds at any GRINS library (see list above).
No need to clean or package seeds – except for milkweeds, whole seed heads are welcome!
"Ecotype" refers to a plant's genetic provenance – its origins in the wild. Our seeds are primarily not of local ecotypes. If you're unsure, leave the ecotype field blank or write "unknown." While we currently do not prioritize ecotypes, we will provide this information when available.
