Having the right supplies is important when growing tomatoes. If this is your first time planting tomatoes in containers, it may be difficult to know where to start. Plus, the gardening section in stores can be overwhelming with so many choices.
Below are two lists to make gathering supplies easier for you. One is a list of Necessary Supplies, and the other, a list of Optional Supplies. Read through the information and make a shopping list before you head to the store.
Using the right size container for your tomato plants is important so the roots have plenty of space to grow. Read the labels on the seeds or tomato plants you purchase. Usually a 5-gallon container works well.
Fertilizer gives your plants the essential nutrients to grow. Not sure whether you should use organic or synthetic?
The 5 minute video below will help you make a decision.
You only need two gardening tools: a trowel and a pruner.
Trowel: used for digging, transplanting, and smoothing soil.
Pruner: used for trimming and shaping plants and removing dead or overgrown branches.
Choosing between seeds and plants depends on your goals, timing, and budget.
Seeds: cost effective and more variety. Requires more time as seeds need to grow indoors before planting outdoors.
Plants: convenient and faster. Ideal for beginners. More expensive.
Tomatoes do well in soil that ensures good drainage, moisture retention, and nutrients. Look for bags of soil that claim to be well-draining and check the ingredients for organic products like peat moss and compost.
Tomato cages or stakes support the plants as they grow.
Water hose: If you have a water hook up outside, a hose is an easy option.
Watering can: If you do not have a water hook up outside, a watering can is your best option.
Below are some supplies that are not necessary but, if you have the budget, can be useful.
Gardening Gloves: for keeping your hands and fingernails clean.
Plant Markers: for labeling the different tomato varieties.
Spray Bottle: for misting the plants when they need a little moisture.
Storage: for keeping your supplies organized.
