(And sometimes as important as food.)
Sunflowers make a flower, even in a drought,
even when they are crowded together, or far apart.
Brooks Memorial Library and Building a Positive Community in Brattleboro, are working to distribute seeds to people who would like to have some hope growing, wherever they are. You can now get sunflowers from the library, with curbside pickup. Paper envelopes of sunflower seeds can be found at the tiny libraries on Spruce Street, Coombs Street, and near the Oak Grove School. If they run out, let us know.
This project was inspired by the yearly, glorious sunflowers that grew in front of Mark and Griff Goehring's house at the corner of Oak and Chapin.
Dig up the soil, poke a hole, drop in a seed, and water it at planting time. Compared to most plants, they are ridiculously easy to grow, and to get satisfaction from. But, it's always best to plant a bunch, so as to be sure to get the beauty and hope growing on your street.
NOTE: The highway department has asked us to NOT plant them too close to the road, because sunflowers can block the view of traffic.
Oak Grove School has a fence around the play ground and school garden area. It's locked, but parents and kids are invited to plant sunflowers along the outside of that fence. We can't plant at the same time, but we can plant at the same place.
The school gardens will eventually be open for growing vegetables, but sunflowers can go into the soil in front of the Oak Grove Fence, now. For more information about the school gardens contact Tara Gordon at tgordon@wsesdvt.org
Look for seeds in the tiny library near the school.
If you live in Brattleboro, Vermont, ( or, anywhere near Brattleboro) and would like seeds to plant, or would like to help distribute seeds in your neighborhood, contact Courtney Carey at courtney@brookslibraryvt.org or Rolf Parker at rolf.bapc@gmail.com, and put "Sunflower" in the subject line.
