We ask for submissions in the form of a designed page(s) that will be compiled into a collective zine to share specific methods or instructions for replicating biomaterial recipes, utilizing biofabrication tools, implementing biomaking practices, or adapting biodesigned artifacts—essentially acting as a tutorial to support other researchers and practitioners. We recognize that materials, tools, practices, and artifacts are often entangled (e.g., biofibers and a biofibers spinning machine, microbial cellulose and a practice of care, bioplastics and a wearable artifact). In these cases, we encourage submitting multiple pages to detail the different aspects of the same overarching project.
The submissions should be in the form of an A5 page ( 14.8 × 21.0 cm or 5.8 × 8.3 in) with 1.5 cm (0.59 in) margins. The page can be oriented either vertically or horizontally and should include:
Short descriptive title of the material, tool, practice, or artifact.
Name of the author(s).
Description of the work (~100 words or less). This description might resemble a list of ingredients, a step-by-step process, the technical details of a tool or artifact, or background information that sets the stage for an annotated illustration or schematic. We encourage submissions that creatively convey information through a combination of text and figures.
Images, schematics, illustrations, and/or photos that demonstrate the work.
Link(s) to additional resources, documentation, publications, etc.
Digitally make the page with tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, GIMP, Miro, and Figma. Or utilize the following Google Slides template to design the submission: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/101hpzT23LWbzeky0rpeb9pP9Fp-y2yRxJGWw8zwYT1E/edit?usp=sharing
We encourage submissions to creatively convey the information succinctly through a combination of text and fitures. See below for example pages!
