Misapplication of weed killer: The robot may incorrectly identify plants as weeds, spraying the plants with weed killer and harming the plants.
Solution: Train the robot on a large dataset to improve the accuracy of weed identification. Program the robot so that it only applies weed killer when it has a 95% confidence level. Add a multi-step confirmation before spraying the weed killer, i.e., identify a weed from afar with 95% confidence level, then when the robot is on top of the weed, reconfirm that it is a weed with 95% confidence level.
Failure to cover the entire garden: The robot may get stuck in a loop, covering only a certain section of the garden while neglecting another section of the garden.
Solution: Implement a path-mapping algorithm to ensure complete coverage of the garden, or program the robot to make random turns at random intervals to lower the chance of getting stuck into a loop.
Hardware reliability: Hardware components such as the camera, battery, and sensors may degrade.
Solution: Inform users to routinely inspect their robots and clean the camera. Provide a warranty so users can send in their old parts for new ones.
E-waste: The robot contains electronic components which may contribute to electronic waste if not disposed properly.
Solution: Provide clear disposal instructions to users and recommend e-waste disposal sites. Allow users to return their old electronic parts and the team will properly dispose of them.
Water contamination: The weed-killer may end up in the water system, contaminating the water.
Solution: Use an eco-friendly weed killer, such as one that is biodegradable, to minimize the impact of water contamination.
Harm to the ecosystem: The robot may harm the animals living there, either by running them over or spraying them with weed killer. These animals may include worms and other bugs that are beneficial to the health of the plants.
Solution: Program the robot to detect movement in its path and temporary pause or change direction to avoid running over or spraying small bugs.
