The AA Cornerstone Recovery Group Story
Our group began in 2005 as an in-person women’s meeting at the Corners Community Center in West Bloomfield Township. While the center itself was struggling, the group was thriving, carrying a “traditional” message focused on staying within the first 164 pages of the Big Book. At that time, the meeting gathered five days per week and was known as the High Noon Women’s Meeting.
In 2010, a decision was made to open the group to all who sought recovery from alcoholism. In keeping with AA tradition, this change welcomed more people while preserving the same focus on recovery. Around this time, the Corners Community Center closed, and the group relocated to the United Methodist Church. With the move came growth in numbers, and the group adopted a new name: Cornerstone Recovery Group.
Even as it grew, members remained committed to keeping the meeting intimate and firmly grounded in the design for living described in the Big Book.
On March 13, 2020, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group transitioned to virtual meetings — first by phone, then by video. Around the same time, the church required a rental contract, which conflicted with AA tradition. The group chose instead to continue meeting online, seven days a week, as Cornerstone Recovery Group.
