Introduction to our project:

We chose to focus our project on multicultural education. Multicultural education emphasis the inclusion of students’ diversity in order to provide quality education for all and reduce discrimination. All students regardless of their cultural characteristics should have access to equal learning.

“Multicultural education incorporates the idea that all students—regardless of their gender, social class, and ethnic, racial, or cultural characteristics—should have an equal opportunity to learn in school” (Banks, 2010: p.3).

Multicultural education is highly interrelated with the global sustainability goals. Multicultural education supports especially the global goal education for all. During our week, we got the opportunity to visit different places and got inspired by amazing people. In the visit in the school in Rosengård we found it inspiring how the school works with the diversity of their student population. The school approaches the diversity in many different aspects. Our interest lays in the practice. Studies show that many times, teachers are aware of the cultural diversity in their classroom, but struggle with the implementation. That's why we chose to support the practice for teachers and created this website.

In order to support multicultural education we share the opinion, that it is important to make the students feel welcomed in the school and integrated. It's only when the students are feeling comfortable and welcomed in the school, learning can take place.

In order to support this integration, social relationships are essential. That is why we collected different activities which can support or build up this social relationships, especially for children from different cultural backgrounds.

"By giving our students practice in talking with others, we give them frames for thinking on their own" - Vygotskij

Talking about culture, we share the believe, that culture includes more than just ethnicity. Culture includes also aspects like socio-economic status, gender, sexual identity, race, disability, religion and values.
