INTRODUCTION
Civil Engineering:
Civil engineering is a branch of engineering responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure. Structures that civil engineers may work with include roads, bridges, dams, railways, and more. Civil Engineers must take into account the circumstances of the environment as they construct structures. Branches of civil engineering that are responsible for different circumstances include: construction and management, geotechnical, structural, transport, water, environmental, coastal and earthquake.
Building Science:
Building science utilizes knowledge from engineering, architecture, chemistry, physics, biology, and life sciences to understanding the behavior of buildings as a system. Through building science, a building can be optimized to withstand natural conditions and prevent any building failures.
Project Description:
This week, our team was tasked with constructing several bridges. We were given specifications for the first virtual bridge, but the second virtual bridge was turned into a 3D scaled model of our final bridge. The final bridge was built to withstand several bricks while placed on a shake table.
DESIGN PROCESS
During the making of the Bridge Designers we made the bridge as an arc and looked at the graph on where the least amount of compression and tension was and lower the strength on it. While doing this strategy, we got the bridge to the budget of 277,561.91
The total amount of net force the Bridge had in total is 27548.
On Model Smart 3D, our team was tasked with building a model of our final bridge, with hinge end supports and the maximum load capacity. This was our first view of how our bridge would function under the weight of the bricks before we made the physical model and the final bridge. After running the analysis, our bridge withheld over 100 pounds of force.
Instead of TinkerCad, we used Fusion360, a software that was more familiar to the member working on the bridge. The base beams were not built in the model as our beams were a later design choice.
