Guadeloupe was named after a Spanish Monastery, Santa Maria de Guadeloupe, by Christopher Columbus following his second voyage in 1493.
Basse Terre is the capital of Guadeloupe. It's role is more political and institutional. The local government offices and regional administration are located heavily there. This emphasizes the geographical divide between Basse Terre, and Pointe-a-Pitre (more tourism based).
As a French overseas region, Guadeloupe uses the Euro (EUR) as their official currency. Coins range from 1 cent to 2 euros, and colorful banknotes from € 5 to € 500.
