Stellar (stylised stellar*) is a New Zealand pop/rock band led by vocalist Boh Runga, sister of acclaimed recording artist Bic Runga. They have had four RIANZ top 10 singles (the highest being "Every Girl" at No. 3) and two No. 1 albums.[1] The band's signature song is "Violent", which at the 2000 New Zealand Music Awards won the Single of the Year award, as well as winning Runga an award for best Songwriter. The band won seven awards, among them the Best Album award for their debut, Mix.[2] This was followed up by 2001's Magic Line and 2006's Something Like Strangers. The band officially disbanded in 2010 after releasing their greatest hits compilation,[3] and reformed in 2017.

In 1992, musicians Boh Runga and Andrew Maclaren moved to Auckland from Christchurch and recorded the single "Ride" with guitarist Joel Haines. The song featured in the short film Headlong by Simon Raby, but the collaboration with Joel Haines did not last. 1994 to 1995 saw Runga and Maclaren recruit guitarist Simon McCormack, followed by bass player Kurt Shanks to form a four-piece, at that time the name Stellar was chosen and the first line up of the band began writing, recording and gigging around Auckland.

Simon McCormack left the band in 1997 and was replaced by a series of guitar players including Derek Solomon before Chris Van de Geer, who had worked as sound engineer on some of the band's demos, took over. In 1998 the band signed on with Sony BMG music NZ, later that year they released their first commercial single "What You Do (Bastard)". 1999 saw their first album release Mix, then the second-highest selling NZ album ever.[4] The album was produced by ex-Thompson Twins singer Tom Bailey.

Mix would go on to gain Stellar numerous accolades at New Zealand's 2000 Tui awards. It was also released in Australia, and resulted in Stellar being a tour support for Alanis Morissette and Garbage. An extended version of Mix was also released, which featured a CD-ROM of three of their music videos.

The band recently reformed in 2017, playing a cover of Sharon O'Neill's 1983 single"Maxine" at the New Zealand Music Awards that same year. Since then, Stellar have been playing in gigs such as the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival in 2019, and the Peachy Keen music festival in 2021.

The music opens with a single tenor line, joined by violas, celli and piano. Following the immensely beautiful opening statement, a translucent sequence of free canonic formations starts to unfold, with recurring, bell-like low note-anchors from the piano embedded. In genuinely Reichian fashion, the refined textures resonate with profoundly emotional undertones, without ever giving in to superficial sentimentality of any kind.

Halfway into the arch, vibraphones and sopranos join, providing further colorist enrichment to the dazzlingly woven counterpoint. Closing with a subtle prayer for voices and instruments, the music gradually evaporates into the silence from whence it first took shape, yielding to a dazzling effect.

Yet, no verbal description comes close to the sheer visceral effect of the music. Be it the astonishing canvases of the opening movement declaring the glory of G-d, the ingenious variations and elongations of the second, the striking tritone word-paintings of the slow movement or the festive Hallelujah of the finale, Tehillim is a musical Credo of life-affirming intensity.

Performed with utmost dedication and rhythmic acuteness, with melodic lines soaring throughout the hall, Tehillim was shrouded in an avalanche of ovations by the full house. Currie and his fellow musicians owned the piece from beginning to end, delivering an astounding performance; one for the books, no less.

Brian went on to a busy avocation as a musician, playing everything from funky rhythm-and-soul with Five Guys Named Moe and classic hits with the JetSet Dance Band to country rock with Flexor T. (His day job is selling real estate.) Along the way he also formed a band with his father called The Generation Gap.

Stellar is a five piece band playing Classic Hits than span the decades. All of the members are professionals and have been performing over 30 years! Their music appeals to multigenerational audiences which makes Stellar a perfect fit for events, dance venues, private parties, festivals and rock or country shows. Their music is influenced by a diverse range of groups, from Fleetwood Mac, to Led Zeppelin, to Joe Walsh, the Steve Miller Band, Sublime, Johnny Cash & Miranda Lambert and many others. Stellar has been rocking festivals, local venues & private parties for over twelve years. Stellar is a crowd pleaser and will keep you dancing and singing for sure. Stellar remains a Central Coast favorite.

The more stars astronomers can examine through seismology, the better they can map where the young and old stars are, and understand which regions of the Milky Way formed first. This is the science of galactic archaeology. By following the trails of vibrations in stars, like an interstellar Indiana Jones would, astronomers can reconstruct how our Milky Way formed.

The duo likes performances to sound spontaneous, and the last thing they want is to perform the same songs in the same exact way every single show. They love the fun that their music brings, and they love the variety and flavor that the mountain music scene brings in general. They want the audiences that see them to have an enjoyable experience, lose themselves in the music, and maybe even come back to see them when they perform again.

If you want to see The Stellar Jays Duo performing live, be sure to head to 261 Eldora Ski Road in Nederland on Sunday, January 29 at 2 p.m., where they will be performing as part of the Timbers Lodge Fireside Music Series. Here are the listings of live music! Check it out and support your local musicians

One of the scientists who use Gaia's data is Prof. Richard Anderson from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He leads a research group that studies how the Universe is expanding. He says Gaia is a very powerful tool for measuring distances to stars. "Gaia improved the accuracy of measuring parallaxes by 10,000 times compared to the previous ESA mission, Hipparcos," he says. 006ab0faaa
