While troubleshooting this problem, I created a custom PDF Style with the correct font identified, but either this font is not installed on the Pressbooks server or it is named differently, because this did not generate a PDF export using Alegreya, but instead defaulted again to Times New Roman.

The Alegreya fonts are designed by Juan Pablo del Peral for Huerta Tipogrfica. Alegreya is a typeface originally intended for literature. It conveys a dynamic and varied rhythm which facilitates the reading of long texts. The italic has just as much care and attention to detail in the design as the roman. I like Alegreya Sans because it has more character than most sans serif fonts. It almost has a very very slight that makes it look very interesting as a headline font that distinguishes it from a sans serif body copy font like roboto.

Alegreya is a super font family with several styles. My favorite is the Alegreya Serif, a classic-looking old-style serif with a friendly vibe, perfect for books or blogs. Some words I use here might be used in unfamiliar ways. In those cases they are terms with specific meaning in typography and font design. I have tried to explain those meanings, but I apologise if I have missed to explain a term or made an inadequate explanation. I can recommend going to Google Fonts or other font web site while reading this and follow along with the various fonts and sample texts.

The default font is Rubik. It is a sans-serif font with an almost aggressively high x-height. The x-height is the relation of the height of the lowercase x to the overall height of the font. Its characters are also relatively wide in comparison to their height, and give an almost square appearance though with rounded corners. Its lines are of uniform thickness. The font has very few embellishments and generally simplified and largely geometric shapes. Its characters are closed, as can be seen on characters like c or e.

What it does not have much of is personality or identity of its own. This goes both for the font itself and the entire default style on fandom.com. This is of course understandable, since it has to apply to wikis of romance, drama, action, or horror; based on stories told in live action, cartoons, comics, or literature; for kids or for adults. It is up to each wiki to provide that personality.

I evaluated the various fonts that were already offered by fandom.com in the Theme Designer. While they are intended to be used as headline fonts, once imported they can easily be used throughout the wiki. It can be a great start to begin experimenting with fonts on a wiki. Here are my thoughts on them.

As its name implies, Roboto Slab is a slab serif and a companion font to Roboto, the Android system font. Slab serifs are characterised by large serifs that are as thick as the widest primary lines of the font. Early slab fonts were almost exclusively display fonts, but nowadays slab fonts are less extreme. It is less closed than Rubik, without being fully open. I find slab serifs poor for body text and smaller sizes, but it could provide a nice contrast in headlines and other short texts.

It also had a technical strike against it. The default distance between lines is extremely large. While it can be adjusted down, it makes it hard to select or copy text. It is a fascinating font, but the combination of limited styles, its very quirky personality, and the technical line-height consideration made me decide against it. With regret, I must say.[Note 2]

The next font I looked at was Source Serif, a freely licensed font from Adobe, made as an exemplar of digital font making. Like Lora it is a transitional antiqua, and the two are rather similar in their broad appearance, though they have plenty of detail differences. But Source Serif was available in many more weights and had small caps and lowercase numerals. I had all but decided to go for Source Serif when I went for another look for a humanist font.

My decision made I started to experiment, and found that what Google delivered was not the full font. No small caps, no choice between lowercase and uppercase numbers. Together with privacy considerations that led me to decide to self-host the font on the wiki itself, which required asking staff to enable upload and use of WOFF2 files. Do not depend on Google Fonts for proper use of typography on the web.[Note 3]

What this demonstrates is that fonts, font sizes, and line heights do not exist in a vacuum. They all interplay with each other, and making a choice of fonts will necessitate also looking at font sizes and line heights.

The font presentation by most font services is rather spartan. Beautiful Web Type is a great collection of samples of high-quality freely licensed fonts that shows much more of the parts of each font.

Monstserrat is a sans serif typeface designed by Argentinean designer Julieta Ulanovsky. Old posters and signage from the traditional neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires influence the fonts design. It commands attention and when combined with the delicate Open Sans creates a mature, sophisticated look.

Alegreya Sans is the sans-serif companion of its sister font Alegreya. It has a calligraphy inspired and humanist design that looks great used as a heading font. Sadly, Alegreya Sans is often overlooked in favour of more popular humanist fonts, like Cabin.

Due to the calligraphic nature of Alegreya Sans you should consider pairing it with Merriweather, a subtle serif font that was specifically designed to be easy to read on screens.

Playful Display, as the name suggests, is a serif font that is well suited for headings. The font is reminiscent of typefaces that were popular from the mid to late eighteenth century, such as Baskerville. It comes with a large font family to chose from, with Playful Display Italics being especially beautiful.

Roboto is a minimal font that makes reading on screen enjoyable. Its versatility has made it one of the most commonly used Google fonts on the web. It can be paired alongside not only Playful Display but with many other heading fonts.

With similarities to font pairings you would find in newspapers or publishing, Open Sans and PT Sans are bold and straight to the point. Open Sans is hard hitting and attention grabbing, whereas PT Sans is more delicate and easy to read. These two typefaces complement each other perfectly.

I hope you find some of the font combinations above useful and inspiring. Pairing fonts can be challenging and time consuming, but they can equally be fun. Combining fonts not only makes your website easier to read but also helps communicate your message more clearly. Remember to limit yourself to only two or three fonts per site and to look for contrast between them. While bold and italic used independently seem to work mostly fine, in many typefaces (Libertinus Serif, Alegreya, Noto Sans...) if I format a text in bold and italic together it does not show as bold & italic, but instead as bold & faux-italic, "slanted" bold.The problem seems to exist only for the specific "bold" weight. In typefaces with more weights, if in the menu I select e.g. "semibold italic" or "light italic", it displays correctly (i.e. semibold & real-italic or light & real-italic, not slanted).Also, in the font menu or in the "character" window the bold-italic option appears correctly formatted, in bold & real-italic, but it anyway appears as bold & faux-italic when on the page. 006ab0faaa
