Welcome to Simbahang Bato
It is a legendary story about a cave in Brgy. San Gabriel, Laurel, Batangas is now known as the "Kapilya ni San Gabriel Archangel or San Gabriel Archangel Church" or "Simbahang Bato". According to the elders and my grandmother's stores, even before this place became a church, the locals considered it sacred. It is covered with large stones, trees and plants and only birds and wild animals can approach it. They say that the people hear beautiful and unique music and different sounds from here. But, despite the cave beauty, no one can come close because they believe that they will get sick according to those who have tried to approach it.
Simbahang Bato is a unique natural rock formation that has been transformed into a place of worship. Unlike traditional churches, it is a cave-like structure where locals gather for prayer, and religious activities. The site holds deep spiritual significance, especially during Holy Week. Historically, it is believed to have served as a refuge for locals during times of conflict. Surrounded by lush forests and hills, Simbahang Bato offers visitors not only a place for devotion but also a serene escape into nature. Accessible through hiking trails, it remains a hidden gem for those seeking both religious and outdoor experiences in Batangas.
Simbahang Bato also holds historical value. According to local accounts, the cave served as a refuge for residents during World War II, offering protection from conflict and danger. Over time, it has remained an important landmark for the community, not just as a place of worship but also as a reminder of the area's past. The site is surrounded by lush greenery, making the journey to Simbahang Bato an adventure in itself. Visitors typically hike through a forested trail to reach the cave, adding an element of nature exploration to their experience. The Simbahang Bato was just a shallow cave developed during the early 1990s by a former parish priest , Fr. Joe Castañeda and continued by Fr. Rene Ramos.
This Simbahang Bato is a cave turned into a church, also known as Kapilya ni San Gabriel Archangel. According to local legend, the cave was considered sacred even before it was converted into a church. The elderly folks in the area share stories about the cave being surrounded by large trees and plants, with only birds and wild animals able to enter. Some even claim to have heard beautiful, unique music coming from the cave. Masses are being held here by former Lipa Archbishop, Ramon Arguelles. The LGU and parish of Laurel, Batangas has been lobbying for support to improve the Simbahang Bato

However, because of the popularity and recall of the Tagaytay “brand”, it is being marketed as a Tagaytay attraction.
