We started our own beef herd in 2013 with 12 cows and 3 heifers. The Grote Beef herd has now grown to over 40 and consists of mostly Black Angus cows, but you will also see a little Red Angus and a couple cross-bred cows sprinkled in the herd.
Our cows give birth in the spring, usually between March and May, at our home farm. We are able to to keep a close eye on the calving process to make sure each cow and calf are doing well. Calves get an ear tag once they are born so that we can identify them from a distance. The heifers get white tags and the bulls get blue tags. The number on the tag starts with the year they were born followed by what number of calf for that season they were born. Example: 3rd calf born in 2019 gets number 903. Starting June 1st, our cows and new calves head out to pasture for the summer.
Throughout the summer we check in on the cows several times per week. We bring them mineral and a small amount of corn as a treat to make sure they all are doing great. We are very blessed to have several great pastures for the cows and calves to graze on all summer long.
In the fall, the calves are weaned from the cows and the herd is brought back home to the farm. The calves begin a new diet consisting of corn as well as always having access to hay. The corn that we feed our cattle is a premium Enogen corn that we raise ourselves. The Enogen corn allows for a more efficient animal and improves marbling in the meat. Our beef cattle are responsibly raised and have no added hormones in order to provide a healthy, high-quality source of protein for your family.
The reason that we have great beef is because we have great cattle.
