Top 5 IT Trends That Will Shape the Aviation Industry in 2022

According to the International Air Transport Association, 2020 will be the worst year in aviation history. While many players in this sector are still reeling from the devastation caused by COVID, the crisis has accelerated and necessitated technological changes to address the critical issues the industry faces in the post-COVID era.

Let's take a look at the information technology trends that are expected to usher in a new way of flying this year.

Digitization enables smart airports

The aviation industry was forced to adapt to the "new normal." This has resulted in airports making everything as contactless and digital as possible.

Many airports, for example, have already revolutionised the check-in process to reduce human-to-human interaction. In many airports today, automated kiosks have replaced traditional check-in desks, and digital signage guides customers through the boarding process.

Security clearance and advanced object and body scanning technology, paperless boarding passes, and an automated boarding process are other examples of increased digitization. As we'll see later, these are all linked by IoT protocols and analysed and deciphered by AI and machine learning algorithms.

IoT and Cloud Computing

Like many other industries, the aviation industry is migrating to the cloud. This not only helps to reduce the most-criticized carbon footprint, but it also provides numerous other tangible benefits.

To begin, cloud-based networks will serve as the infrastructure for the plethora of IoT-enabled devices that are currently being installed throughout airports. The ability to track the passenger autonomously through the check-in and boarding process has several advantages, including improved security.

Second, airports are expensive to operate. Even minor efficiency gains from IoT-enabled sensor-based PoE lighting can result in significant cost savings.

Machine Learning and AI

Continuing on the same theme, the previously mentioned connected devices (along with the data they send to the cloud) will serve as the foundation for artificially intelligent algorithms to sift through trillions of terabytes of data in order to uncover meaningful operational insights.

While a hospital may use machine-learning-based algorithms to improve care, airports will need to use the same technology to provide insights into retail spending, security processes, travel patterns, bathroom facilities, parking, and check-in habits, among other things. Such a broad analysis can only be carried out concurrently with the assistance of AI-based programmes and machine learning algorithms.

But it's not just airports. Machine learning insights are also helping the aviation manufacturing industry. For example, GE employs machine learning and data analytics to detect engine faults, extending component life and lowering maintenance costs. Boeing, on the other hand, has successfully developed machine-learning algorithms for aircraft design and factory automation.

Technology for Social Distancing

While vaccination campaigns are making inroads against the virus's threat, social isolation will persist for the foreseeable future. Airports have been among the most visible users of social distancing technology.

Crowd-density monitors with cameras are already helping to control passenger flows in high-traffic areas. Radar and 3D sensors have been repurposed in other cases to improve physical separation and manage people flows across terminals.

Virtual queuing, security checkpoint reservations, and "bingo boarding" are other social distancing technologies being introduced to airports across America, all of which help to reduce crowding at traditional bottlenecks along the passenger journey. These innovations will be critical once passenger numbers return to pre-pandemic levels while the virus remains a threat.

Blockchain

Almost every industry is experimenting with blockchain, and aviation is no exception. Currently, blockchain is most commonly used in aircraft manufacturing.

Boeing has been at the forefront of using blockchain technology to keep an immutable and shareable record of aircraft parts and systems during manufacturing and maintenance since the 737 MAX scandals. As a result, they can predict maintenance events more accurately, optimise production operations, and extend the life cycle of specific parts.

Airbus, on the other hand, is integrating blockchain-based solutions into its supply chain tracking and procurement departments in the hopes of facilitating faster, more secure transactions as well as increased efficiencies up and down the chain.
