Humanity & Democracy

This resource provides online learning content in two modules.

  • The film module focuses on a 2005 British black comedy film called Keeping Mum.

  • The debate module focuses on such key topics as society, culture, democracy, and the EU.

To provide an optimum outcome, online learning and face-to-face instruction should go half-and-half. For autonomous learning, the materials are most suitable for upper secondary students who have reached EFL level B2.

Background information

  • Our project team decided to experiment with film, to motivate, and with debate, to challenge our students to achieve higher.

  • Also, to promote greater depth in language learning, we generated soft CLIL online content that supports CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) through rich input and cognitively demanding tasks.

  • Regarding format, we opted for Google Sites as it made our job easier in several ways: online collaboration, flexibility, and practicality.

  • Altogether, there are three reusable resources: Human Dignity & Freedom; Humanity & Democracy; and Human Rights & The Rule of Law. Each resource stands alone, but we highly recommend covering them in a sequence of three.

  • It is also possible to do a film module from one resource and a debate module from another. You can also cover specific topics only.

  • All materials (except for external resources) are carefully collected and adapted to meet our heterogenous student groups' learning needs.

  • Differentiation in instruction is provided with alternatives between more and less cognitively demanding tasks.
