Children’s Grief Awareness Day
November 19, 2026
Every grieving child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
Sibling Grief Matters Too
When a brother or sister dies, surviving siblings lose someone who shared their family, their memories, and the future they expected to have together. Their grief can sometimes be overlooked while attention is focused on the parents, but their loss is profound and deserves to be recognized.
Siblings grieve differently depending on their age, their relationship, and their understanding of what has happened. They may express grief through questions, silence, anger, creativity, faith, tears, or changes in behavior. There is no correct way to grieve and no timetable for learning how to carry the loss.
Some siblings shared many years and memories with the child who died. Others may have been very young—or even born later—and grow up knowing their brother or sister through family stories. Every sibling deserves a safe and loving way to understand that their brother or sister remains part of their family.
Children will never be expected to share publicly. Names, photographs, stories, and personal information will only be published with appropriate permission, and adult siblings will decide for themselves what they wish to share.
As Grieving Parents Garden grows, this space will offer age-appropriate stories, reflections, activities, and resources—so grieving siblings of every age know that their love and their grief matter too.
