Message from Dr. Rhea Lawson, Director of HPL

The African American Library at the Gregory School will become the premier facility and repository for research and programs about the history of African Americans in Houston and the surrounding region.

Its mission is to build, preserve and make accessible to historians, researchers and the public an incomparable collection of multi-type resources including but not limited to reference books, rare books, archived materials, exhibits, artifacts, oral histories, and programs that tell the story and celebrate the history of African Americans in Houston, the surrounding region and African Diaspora.

An organic space, the African American Library at the Gregory School will provide visitors with the opportunity to actively experience some aspects of history through interactive exhibits, programs, lectures, demonstration, skits and stories.

People will leave the Gregory School having increased knowledge, deeper understanding and a whetted appetite for learning more about the history and culture of African Americans.
