According to the June 10, 1995 edition of the Baltimore Sun a dismembered man whose body was cut into pieces and placed in a garbage bag was found in the 4700 block of Franklintown Road. The man was identified as Gregory Melvin Smith, 25, of the 2400 block of Bridgehampton Drive. On June 9, 1995 Robert Malcolm McLain, 27, of the Bridgehampton address was charged with first degree murder and weapons violation. The two had lived together for a month but had been friends for nine years. Mr. Smith had been stabbed repeatedly with a knife before being dismembered had been dead for several days before being found.
The Baltimore Sun does not give us a reason for why Mr. McLain murder Mr. Smith. Extra information: According to the Judiciary Case Search in 1990 Mr. Gregory Melvin Smith pleaded Not Guilty to a prostitution/procurement-solicitation charge. He was given a PBJ and fined court costs.
Also according to the Judiciary Case Search, Mr. McLain pleaded guilty to second degree murder. On October 18, 2000 while incarcerated in Hagerstown, Mr. Robert Malcolm McLain legally changed his name to Darryl Anthony Harris McLain or Darryl McLain.
There exists a MySpace profile for a Darryl McLain whose background is very similar to Darryl McLain listed above. That Darryl McLain uses the nickname "DeeRock" and from the page says: "I like to cook, eat, and meet new people. I especially like learning new things - love the value and power that education - in any setting - brings." He's on Facebook too. This blogger says he's done his time, let's wish him well. So far Darryl McLain hasn't appeared in the case search.
