Promoting Sustainable Stewardship of Green Spaces in Venice:

Creating an interactive catalog to match people with land

Objectives:

  1. To inventory and categorize green spaces into an interactive catalog

  2. To promote sustainable stewardship through the dissemination of knowledge

  3. To develop a mechanism to match green spaces to potential stewards

Final Catalog

The final map catalog of green spaces in Castello, as recorded by this project group, in addition to the Giudecca green spaces recorded by the 2017 Green Venice project group.

Mapped by Accessibility

This map distinguishes each space by its accessibility. There are 3 access categories:

Full access: complete public access 24/7

Limited access: Accessible at certain times, by payment, or with special permission.

No access: Unable to enter

Categorized by Land Type

This map visually categorizes each green space by land classification. The 5 land types include park, garden, urban wild, farmland, and courtyard.

Categorized by Land Condition

This interactive map visually categorizes each space by land condition. These conditions are based on three equally weighted factors: maintenance, litter, and aesthetics.

The land condition is categorized as poor, fair, good, great, and outstanding. The rubric for these conditions can be found in our Files page.

Venice 2021 Culture Team Blog

8/30/21 - We are sending out an email soon to set up an introductory meeting with We Are Here Venice.

9/2/21 - Just had our first meeting with So Young from We Are Here Venice, and we are so excited to work with her on this project!

9/12/21 - Our team tried out our green space Google form on Institute park to see how well it works, and improved it afterwards according to our comments.

9/19/21 - We Are Here Venice hosted a chromatography workshop today over Zoom for those interested in learning more about their soil. We were able to attend and meet a variety of people. It was insightful to experience an outreach event by WahV. We are grateful to have a sponsor that is so deeply involved in the city. Our project can use this as a source of inspiration for our own possible soil testing and future outreach ideas.

10/04/21 - The Project Introduction, Mission Statement, Objectives, Background, and Methodology have been reviewed and edited a number of times by our team and advisors to get as accurate as possible. Our team is now preparing for the start of our site research once we arrive in Venice. We have finalized our field form to use on the green spaces and formed our website database to display the information we collect & the map we create. We cannot wait to begin our journey in Italy.

11/01/21 - We are in Venice! Our team has begun deep diving into the green space cataloging process over the past two weeks that we have been here. Following our tentative schedule, which starts in the bottom right corner of Castello, we have started visiting spaces and filling out our form. We have been able to meet with So Young from We Are Here Venice several times to determine logistics for this procedure. We are looking forward to bringing our database to completion over the next few weeks.
