GreenTeach is a 501(c)(3) meant to be a force of impact within underprivileged communities. Not by some outside organization trying to impose their own values for their own benefits. It will be a path of empowerment through education and togetherness. As the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Champion and a lifetime member of the National Geographic Society, I am dedicated to making a change in the world through education.
The following is a flexible model of a GreenTeach project:
First, there will be a research period done by the community themselves to identify the most pressing environmental concerns that most directly impact their community. The research period will be guided by GreenTeach with steps walking through certain environmental indicators of common environmental problems.
Next, the community will report their findings to GreenTeach, which will build a specific education program explaining the science behind the problems and potential solutions that the community can explore.
With knowledge learned from the program, which will also involve fun interactive activities with food and music to enforce a sense of both community and education, the community can work to use what they learned to tackle environmental issues in their communities.
After developing their self-driven environmental service project, the community will write a report to talk about how their collaboration as a community has led them to positively impact themselves in the form of an environmental service project.
This way, GreenTeach can have a collection of the amazing stories around the world showing how underprivileged communities have been empowered by science to bring change to their own communities, so other communities can be inspired by the power of community science. The goal is to start with communities around Texas, grow to have chapters across the US, and then eventually globally.
