Deike Peters, Ph.D.
Hi! I am a German-American urbanist and environmentalist. Because, yes - cities and nature can be compatible! You can read more about my academic background as an urban planner and environmental advocate here. I am also currently the Director of the Environmental Studies concentration at Soka. I loved putting this Ecocinema Learning Cluster together because I believe that films and other new media are crucial for raising awareness about the many environmental challenges we face. On a personal level, reconnecting with nature is a daily necessity for me. So when I am not stuck in front of my laptop writing, watching, researching, prepping for class, or zooming away, you will likely find me out biking, hiking or running somewhere along the LA coastline or in the local mountains.
Skyler Wolf, Class of 2022
I am a third-year humanities student focusing on Japanese film and literature. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, I’m an amateur poet just beginning to come in contact with the Arizona art scene. One of the hardest parts about doing classes online is how hard it is for students to share their artistic voices amongst each other. For now, I hope to move onto graduate school and eventually get a PhD (just don’t ask me what in…) after my time at Soka. Although this is my first major foray into the world of ecocinema, I believe that films are one of the best tools we have to not only teach us about ourselves but the world around us. This Learning Cluster has taught me about the struggles to be eco-conscious not just in the United States but around the world. Ultimately, I have realized that the fight for an equitable, ecofriendly world is not just an environmental issue but one that involves social hierarchies, international relations, and ethics. The conversation on the natural world and its place in film has only just begun.
Cole Daneman, Class of 2023
Hi there! I'm Cole (he/him/él), and I'm a second-year student concentrating in Social & Behavioral Sciences. I am from Ashland, Oregon, location of the Shasta village K’wakhakha. In Oregon, like many places, environmental issues can be subject to huge controversy. The political, social, and cultural forces that determine approaches to climate, preservation/extraction, water/drought, regulation of industry, and land use fascinate me, and this Learning Cluster has addressed many of those issues.
Kentaro Shintaku, Class of 2023
Hello friends!!! My name is Ken, and I'm from Hokkaido, Japan! I was able to attend a forest kindergarten where I would often spend time surrounded by nature, climbing trees, and collecting insects and plants. When I was in junior high, I encountered SUA alum from India, Mr. Nitesh Sil, who had recently founded an English language school in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Becoming a student at his school transformed the way I thought about life, and the encounter with him was an encounter with Soka education. My dream attending Soka University has been to create research that combines my love of nature and Soka education. This dream came true through SUA’s 2020 Learning Cluster program, “Moved by Nature,” which allowed me and my amazing friends to travel to Sweden and Denmark along with our great teacher Professor Deike!
Saanika Joshi, Class of 2023
Hi! My name is Saanika Joshi and I am part of the class of 2023. I am concentrating in Life Sciences. This learning cluster attracted me immediately because I love to watch nature documentaries. I grew up watching the Planet Earth and Blue Planet series and have been hooked on nature documentaries since. Last year, I had the opportunity to really explore my relationship with nature through a travel learning cluster to Scandinavia to study outdoor education. It taught me how to utilize my relationship with nature to live a healthier and happier life. During the pandemic, my family adopted a dog, which has allowed me to explore the natural parks and areas around my town in Southeastern Virginia. Learning more about nature and how our actions affect it is so enlightening because it makes me more passionate about fighting for environmental justice in the many aspects of our society!
Vianne Militar, Class of 2023
Hello! My name is Vianne, and I am a second-year planning on double-concentrating in Social & Behavioral Sciences and Environmental Studies. I am from Quezon City, Philippines, although I have mostly grown up in Joshua Tree, California. Growing up next to Joshua Tree National Park and often going to screenings at the Palm Springs International Film Festivals with my friends, this learning cluster sparked my interest in further exploring the relationship between cinema and the environment, specifically towards environmental justice. Last year, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Moved by Nature learning cluster, where we traveled to Scandinavia to study outdoor education. Much like how education can be an empowering tool for environmental justice, art, in this case being cinema, can be an empowering tool as well. It’s enlightening, further exploring more platforms to address environmental issues.
Alex Bershtein, Class of 2024
Hello! My name is Alex, and I am a first year planning on concentrating in Social and Behavioral Sciences but have a passion for environmental studies. Growing up in Southern California and having family members who live in Puerto Rico, I have been exposed to nature. In third grade, I had the opportunity to go to the LA Arboretum every other week. There I was exposed to various aspects of nature on land. In Puerto Rico, I have had the opportunity to go scuba diving and explore life under the ocean. This is why I chose to take this cluster; I enjoyed watching films and want to do better to lessen my environmental impact on this planet. On a lighter note, I have a dog and a cat; I enjoy playing soccer and going to amusement parks.
Mukesh Bastola, Class of 2024
Hello! I am from Nepal, and I grew up in northern-Nepal, beneath the high Himalayas. I have always been a travel enthusiast and travel around my country frequently. It relates to my childhood home with a picturesque view of the majestic mountains, and I always enjoyed spending time in nature. In spring, we had so many tourists in our village where they used to show us movies and documentaries. I had never thought I would be watching so many documentaries years later and feel sad at how uninformed and unknown I am of so many global problems. I feel delighted to have chosen this Learning Cluster as it has helped me gain a new perspective towards the cinema, nature, human activities, and problems.
Ran Watari, Class of 2024
Hello! My name is Ran Watarai. Growing up in Tokyo, I actually had neither enough opportunity to get in touch with nature nor much understanding about environmental issues. I wanted to learn about a field of study that I was not familiar with and like watching films, so this learning cluster’s contents were perfect for me. Looking back at the three weeks, I really enjoyed this learning cluster, and now I can feel a strong connection with nature and increased my interest in the environment. From such my experience, I thought that the role of environmental documentaries is crucial in changing many people’s environmental awareness.
Taehyeong Kim, Class of 2024
Hi, everyone! I am Taehyeong Kim from South Korea. I experienced nature a lot when I was a child. When I was in elementary school, my grandmother and I visited the mountain behind our village and picked some sweet wildflowers. After we came back home, she cooked me delicious food made from the flowers we collected. At that time, it was okay to eat flowers in the mountain because the environment was not dramatically polluted. However, nowadays, I cannot even imagine making food with mountain wildflowers. By experiencing diverse things related to nature, I naturally become interested in the environment. Moreover, Since I was young, I’ve loved watching nature documentaries. Whenever I watched scary lions, running cheetahs, dramatic survival from predators, and the great apes who act like human beings in documentaries, I became more excited. Thus, this learning cluster, Green Screenings, was perfect for me. I’m so happy that I was able to watch a lot of awesome documentaries and films through this LC. I hope you can also have a wonderful experience with our fancy site. Thank you!
