This spy movie is part of the very famous James Bond series. Bond is on a mission to stop villains who are plotting a military coup in Bolivia in order to monopolize the water resources.
In the film, a very wealthy businessman named Green colludes with a Bolivian warlord in exile and makes a deal with him to support the military coup in exchange for exclusive rights to the water resources. Bond succeeds in uncovering and stopping the plot of Green, and in the final scene leaves Green alone in the desert, giving him only one can of oil. In the end, Bond learned that Green was found dead with oil in his stomach.
Bolivia, where the film is set, has a long and very complicated history of various conflicts over water. Privatization of the water supply and interference by multinational corporations have led to skyrocketing water tariffs as well as severe water pollution in some cases, and people have suffered the loss of water, which is an essential means of livelihood. Against this background, various movements and conflicts have occurred over the years, including the Cochabamba Water War in 2000.
This blockbuster film does not necessarily touch directly on the issue of water. However, the inclusion of the conflict over water in the story set in Bolivia, and the ending where the bad guy who tried to control all the water sources dies of water starvation in the end, imply the seriousness of the water wars that have actually occurred and the importance of water.
