This film is a documentary focusing on ocean issues and the life of Sylvia Earle, a renowned oceanographer and environmental activist.
Earle has always loved the ocean as a child and was heartbroken when she heard about the oil accidents and other tragedies that started happening one after another at sea. Even though it was not a common practice at the time, she started her career as a female oceanographer and began to travel around the world, participating in various exploratory research and projects.
As she travels around, she sees the brutal treatment of sharks, the cruel destruction of coral reefs, and the overfishing of too many fish species.
The film introduces Earle’s efforts to increase the number of "Hope Spots," which are places where marine ecosystems have been destroyed but have regained their diversity and come back to life, which would replace “dead zones,” which are places where all the marine ecosystems have been destroyed.
Mission Blue is very effective in that it alternates between the life of Sylvia Earle—a hero who has dedicated her life to protecting the ocean—and the tragedies that have actually occurred in the ocean, giving the viewer both inspiration and knowledge of the issue at the same time.
People would probably never forget the scene where Earle said that the ocean and we are one and the same. Her experience has made her realize that she is a part of the ocean and nature, and that the ocean and nature are a part of her. Her courage and wisdom in taking action against the damage and destruction of the ocean as if it were happening to her is truly remarkable.
