You will be designing and making your own lyre or musical instrument that plays beautiful music to entice the gods and goddesses.

• You are going to learn design techniques to create a musical instrument that is playable.
• You are going to be introduced to programming musical notes.
• You are going to learn how to wire up your headphones, a buzzer, or small speaker to the Micro:bit to be able to hear your music you create.
• You will learn a bit about musical notation as you craft your music.

Must Have

• Micro:bit(usb cable and battery pack)
• Alligator clips

Step 1: What is a lyre?

Explore online about a lyre? What does it look like? How does it work? What music can you find that the musician is playing a lyre?

Optional: If you have the option to create an instrument besides a lyre, then do the same as above for your chosen instrument.

Step 2: What is beautiful music?

What are some simple songs you can learn to program and/or play? Come up with a class list of some basic songs to get started. IMPORTANT NOTE: With the basic materials we are using you will have access to 3 note of interactive components. Look for 3 note songs!

Step 3: Sketch your lyre or musical instrument

How are you going to make your instrument? Examine the materials available to you. What will you need? What size will you make it? How will you interact with your instrument to trigger the notes to play?(remember conductive materials from previous lesson)

On a piece of paper sketch out your design plan for your musical instrument. You can choose to make a lyre like in the myth or make your own unique instrument.

It does not have to be 3 Dimensional. There are ways to create 2 Dimensional instruments that play music.

Come up with several different design concepts .

A few things to consider

• The A and B buttons can be used to make music
• The accelerometer could be used to change the notes of the music
• Use pins 1 and 2 to create more notes for your instrument

KEY REMINDER

You will be using the Pin 0 and GND outputs for your speaker/headphone/buzzer so these will be used, but not for making a musical note.

Once you have the plan ready present it to your teacher for approval.

• Can you create your own music that is pleasing to the ear?
