The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a National Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. This park is the most visited park in the United States. It is well known for the haze and mist present, which looks like "smoke". The formation of this park began around 310 to 245 million years ago. At that moment, the African continent collided with the American continent, resulting in what we now know as Pangaea. As a part of this process, heat and pressure melted the rocks, resulting in them becoming igneous while underground. While the different plates were colliding, the horizontal layers were broken up by the rock, resulting in the older rocks getting buried and pushed up and over the younger rocks. This gave it its name, "The Great Smoky Fault".
