Ice House Theater

Great MoCo Baking Show

The Great MoCo Baking Show is a project of the Ice House Theater. It's part community theater, part virtual theater, part cooking show and a whole lot of fun. The final production will be a prerecorded “live” TV show that will be available to view on line. It will be recorded at the Ice House and in participants kitchens and presented online.

The "studio" at the Ice House will have a large screen, where our two hosts can “interact” with the contestants and view what is happening in their kitchens. The footage provided by participants will be edited to appear as if it is being recorded live, with a video connection to every household.

(How it works)

Our two hosts, in the studio (recorded at the Ice House), will introduce the show, introduce the contestants (using footage each team provides), explain the challenge, and then check in on progress as contestants bake their master piece, (using footage provided by each team). When the deadline is reached each team will present (once again with self shot footage) their final product and explain how it meets the challenge.

The Participant Teams

The show will feature 5 to 10 baking teams.

Each team will consist of as many members of a household as can comfortably fit in the kitchen.

For everyone's safety and to avoid having to wear masks, all the team members need to be from the same household or family.

There is no limit or age requirements, however each member of a team will need to agree to be recorded, and children will need parental permission.

In keeping with it being a Morgan Arts Council event, each team needs to have a connection to Morgan county.

The Challenge

Each team will create a decorated baked dessert, (cake, series of cupcakes, pie, etc) that represents or pays homage to an iconic Morgan County image. For example, a frosted layer cake in the shape of the court house.

Participants may use any recipe they want, however they will need to create it from scratch* the use of cake mixes or premixed frosting will disqualify a team.

* the use of pre-made decorations are allowed if they represent less than 25% of the decoration.

Check with the director if you have questions.

Each team will discuss their project with the director. The category is intentionally open ended, it can be a person*, place, thing or event.

* Please gain permission for the use of a contemporary person.

The use of locally sourced ingredients is encouraged (home grown or purchased locally) but not required.

Auditioning

Before you begin select one member of your team to be the contact person, they will be responsible for filling out the audition form and other paperwork prior to the start of filming. Additionally the project director will arrange a short phone call to explain the process and answer any questions.

The Process (how the whole things works)

On the day of baking and filming

•Each team will gather their ingredients, set up their phone, camera or video camera in a location where it can catch most of the kitchen.

•Before you start cooking each person on the team will talk directly to the camera, introducing themselves. (See example below)

•With the camera running they will complete the recipe, self narrating as they go (reading the recipe out loud, talking among themselves, and commenting what is happening).

While the items are baking or cooling, team members will answer the questions provided.

When the dessert is complete the team or a representative will present it to the camera and explain how it meets the challenge.

Note 1: The final video will include only the highlights from each team, perhaps 5 minutes or so. It is hoped that each team will submit 30-60 minutes of footage to allow the editor to select the best. So for best results don’t edit the footage before submitting it.

Note 2: If you have an extra camera shy family member, they can act as camera person and get close ups or different angles. However please use a tripod when recording the interview questions.

Note 3: Mistakes and mishaps are what makes reality TV work and grand failures are Emmy winners. The directors intent is to create a fun and light hearted family friendly show, so slightly embarrassing goofs will be used, while foul language or truly embarrassing events will be edited out.

Note 4: Please do not have music playing while you are filming. It makes it harder to hear you talking and can make the footage unusable because of copyright issues.

Note 5: Be aware of what is in the background of your filming and the words or images on your team members clothing. Ideally avoid clothing with commercial or political logos or images. Like wise check the background for potentially embarrassing images or items.

Note 6: If for some reason you do not complete all the filming on the same day please wear the same clothes when you resume filming.

Notes on Filming

For the success of this project each team must be able to video record the cooking and the interview questions and submit the footage to the Ice House.

Camera

A modern smart phone (iPhone or Android) is all that is needed to record the process. If you have a video camera or SLR that records video and sound either can be used as well. If you use a phone remember to always record in landscape mode (the camera held horizontal). Recording with the phone upright produces tall narrow footage that has big black areas on both sides when displayed on a TV and we won’t be able to use it.

Tripod

If you are using a phone then a phone holder and tripod will be needed to stabilize the camera. Nothing fancy, these can be purchased at Walmart or target or found online. You can find a kit with tripod, holder, and a light for under $30.

Lighting

Some thought should be given to lighting. A good rule of thumb, The primary light source should be behind and above the camera aimed towards the action, If you are the subject, you should be looking into the light. Bright light behind the subject, like a window, can fool the camera and you’ll end up looking like shadow.

Camera Person

If you have an extra camera shy family member, they can act as camera person and get close ups or different angles. However please use a tripod when recording the interview questions.

*The Ice House will have a few tripod/ light kits that you can borrow for this project.

Getting the footage turned in

If you have reliable high speed internet you can upload the footage to the following google folder. If you would prefer, you can transfer the footage to a flash drive and drop it off at the Ice House. If you are not sure how to get the footage off your devise contact the director/editor for other options.

The Interview Questions

During the final show the hosts will be “virtually visiting” your kitchen and informally asking questions.

When answering the questions imagine that one of the hosts is asking you the question. (It may help to have another member of your team read the question before you answer) Look directly at the camera when talking. See attached video for a sample. If one of the questions below does not apply feel free to not answer it.

Answer this question before you start baking

1) Would you tell us who you are and where you’re from?

These questions can be answered during lulls in the process (baking, cooling, etc)

2) How did you get your start in baking?

3) Tell us little bit about the recipe you are using, have you used it before? Where did you find/learn it? What made you choose it?

4) (if you are using a locally sourced ingredient) What can you tell us about your local ingredients?

5) Feel free to add any other comments that you think the viewers might find interesting.

The Grand Presentation

When your creation is complete, it is time for the grand presentation. (Please film all of this)

  • Place it on a table or counter top, and film some footage of it, moving the camera around to get it from all sides would be great.

  • With whole team behind and around the creation, answer the following question:

Can you talk a little bit about the iconic Morgan County Image you are representing, what is it and why you chose it.

• Now it’s time for the taste test, cut and serve the item to the team members. Feel free to add any additional comments (directly to the camera) about how it tastes or the process of creating it.
