English grammar is the system of rules and principles that specify how to arrange and use words within the English language. The study of grammar includes parts of speech, word structure, sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tenses. Other aspects of grammar include word order within a sentence and agreement of subjects and predicates or pronouns and their antecedents.

Understanding English grammar can improve your ability to communicate in English. This is especially helpful for English language learners who may not be familiar with the sentence construction and word order forms used in English. Like all languages, English has guidelines that define its syntax. For example, sentences in English typically follow the order of subject-verb-object, similar to Swahili and Thai but different from Japanese and Irish, according to the Linguistic Society of America.

Love Scattergories but not quite sure how to translate it to your classroom? Try this grammar activity! Assign students a specific letter of the alphabet, and tell them they have to come up with a common noun, proper noun, and collective noun that begins with that letter.

Nouns are naming words. Verbs are doing words. Adjectives are describing words. Boy, do I remember these grammatical rules being drummed into me at school. Punctuation and grammar are so important to effective written communication but to many children they don't feel exciting. If this is the case for your child, finding a good quality app that allows him to apply what he is learning in a fun, interactive environment might make all of the difference to his level of interest and engagement with those nouns and pronouns!

Lessons cover the following topics: pronouns, determiners, quantifiers, possessives, adjectives, adverbials, nouns, and verbs. The British Council site also offers one-to-one courses with personal tutors and live classes.

Grammar.com provides educational resources to help with grammar and spelling learning. Students can access discussions of common grammatical mistakes in English, learn about the proper use of the different parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, interjections, adverbs, etc), develop strong command of vocabulary, and learn about the use of punctuation marks.

It is a concrete subject: you learn a rule, then you apply it and use it. Many English learners are familiar with doing worksheets in class and feel in their comfort zone, even when the grammatical concept they are learning is a bit more difficult.

Younger children (ages 6-9) learn grammar best through play, singing and real-life use of grammatical structures because they are not able to process the abstract information that is grammar yet. Older students have the ability to think abstractly and therefore, form-focused grammar instruction works well with them.

This site is for ESL students and anyone who needs to refresh English grammar skills. The Archive lays out all 440 lessons and 88 quizzes in two forms: by sequential lesson number and by subject. In the first group, the lessons are divided into three categories: Parts of Speech, Parts of the Sentence, and Mechanics. Lessons begin with an explanation, followed by an exercise. In the subject area, concepts are presented alphabetically, then further subcategorized.

In a smart classroom, instructors could easily open the Daily Grammar archive and have students do exercises for review. The site also includes a glossary of grammar terms that not only defines the grammatical concept but also provides a link to the applicable lessons.

The Road is primarily a site for ESL students and teachers, but with the variety of activities, the site would complement an English grammar classroom really well. Where in the real world will your students encounter the language structure you are teaching in class? Can you bring that situation into your classroom? We have all heard about realia and bringing it into the classroom, but what exactly is realia? It is real life material that your ESL students can use in the classroom. You might bring in a menu, a bus schedule, or a newspaper. Any of those is realia and is a great way of connecting the real world with the classroom. When you teach your next grammar lesson, think about where students might see and use that structure outside the ESL classroom, and then bring those connections into your room.

Read and write as much as you can in the language you're trying to learn; consult grammar manuals to confirm that you are understanding its grammar correctly; test and quiz yourself on the skills you learn; and converse with others who are more proficient in the language than you. These are all effective ways to improve your grammar online.
