GrayBox is a camera app with a passcode-protected vault, made by Nolan Mayoss. The short version: GrayBox collects nothing. Everything you record stays on your iPhone or iPad.
WHAT WE COLLECT
Nothing. GrayBox has no accounts, no sign-in, no server, and makes no network connections of its own. We do not collect, receive, store, or sell any personal data. The app contains no third-party advertising, analytics, or crash-reporting SDKs, and sets no cookies.
WHERE YOUR FOOTAGE LIVES
Photos and videos you capture or import are stored only inside GrayBox's private storage on your device. They are never written to your Photos library unless you export them yourself, are never uploaded anywhere, and are excluded from device backups so that vault contents cannot leak into an unencrypted backup. Files are protected with iOS data protection.
Your passcode is never stored in plain text. GrayBox keeps only a salted hash in the iOS Keychain, on this device only. If you forget your passcode, we cannot recover it. There is no account and no reset.
AUTO-WIPE
With Auto-wipe on (the default), the vault deletes its contents after a number of wrong passcode attempts that you choose. This happens entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to us before, during, or after.
PERMISSIONS GRAYBOX MAY ASK FOR
Camera and Microphone: to record photos and video. Audio is recorded only while the microphone toggle is on.
Photos: only when you choose to import from, or export to, your Photos library.
Face ID: only if you turn it on as an alternative to your passcode. Face ID is handled by iOS; GrayBox never sees biometric data.
Location (While Using): only if you enable Show speed in Car Mode. Your speed is drawn into the video frame as it is recorded and then discarded. GrayBox does not store, log, or transmit your location or route.
If you enable the face-down Instant-Lock gesture (Pro), GrayBox reads the accelerometer while recording, solely to notice that the phone has been placed face down. Nothing is recorded or stored from it.
IN-APP PURCHASE
GrayBox Pro is a one-time purchase processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles the transaction and any payment details; GrayBox only receives confirmation from Apple that the purchase is valid. See Apple's privacy policy for how Apple handles App Store purchases.
SECURITY LOG (PRO)
The optional security log records that events happened (for example, that a wrong passcode was entered, or that the vault was erased) and when. It records no passcodes, no guesses, and no file names, and it never leaves your device.
CHILDREN
GrayBox is not directed at children under 13 and collects no information from anyone.
CHANGES
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
