Our project Grass Sheets has created a new alternative to traditional paper; one made from grass instead of trees! We came up with the idea during art class when working on a paper making project. We thought that the concept of making paper was interesting and we wanted to continue working with it. Instead of using wood based paper, we used an extremely abundant resource that is highly discarded: Grass. This paper is made from two main materials. These are water and grass. A mixture is created from these ingredients and using a mold and deckle to collect the fibers, our sustainable paper is created!
From this paper we have created many interesting products. Firstly, grass paper bags were created to hold miniature items. One of our most innovative items is our grass paper pouches. These pouches have wildflower seeds in them and a biodegradable label to seal them. These pouches are planted in the ground and wildflower seeds will grow from them! The pouch and label are biodegradable, so no waste is left behind! We have also created bookmarks with facts about grass waste to spread awareness about our project. Envelopes are another one of our sustainable products, which is stylish and perfect for eco conscious consumers. Lastly, we have created invitations from our bleached paper, and these invitations will be used to supply two future weddings!
With this project, we have been very active in our community. Firstly, both Offaly County Council and Tullamore Pitch and Putt Club have been involved in supplying us with grass to help us with our project. This has been especially useful during the winter months, when the grass wasn’t growing as fast as usual. We visited Ballinagar NS and gave an insightful presentation about our project which definitely helped to spread awareness.
Our project has made significant progress in terms of competitions. At the Young Environmentalist competition in the convention centre, we were delighted to win the Eco-Entrepreneurship award. We also were lucky to win 3rd prize in the BNM National Upcycling competition. We believe that our biggest win was at the Young Social Innovators, where we were awarded with the top prize of Overall Gold Winners. From winning YSI, we now have the opportunity to attend the Sage World Cup 2025 in Georgia! Recently we were extremely lucky to win 1st place at the Student Inventions stand at the Tullamore Show!
