Explainable AI (XAI) seeks to disclose how an AI system arrives at its outcomes. But the nature of the disclosure depends in part on who needs to understand the AI and the available explanation modalities (e.g. verbal and visual). People's preferences regarding explanation modalities might differ, some might prefer spoken explanations compared to visual ones. However, we might also consider broadening the explanation modalities, to consider also tangible and physical forms. Historically, physical forms have mediated people’s interactions with objects, and more recently user interaction with everyday use objects, IoT and smart devices, such as smart lighting and robotic vacuum cleaners. But whether it can support AI explanations has not yet been explored.
In this second studio proposal on Graspable AI (GAI) we seek to explore design qualities of physical forms as an explanation modality for XAI. The studio intends to bring together a group of designers, artists, philosophers, HCI and AI researchers around the topics of Explainable AI and Tangible Embodied Interaction (TEI).
We invite interested participants to submit a position paper (2–4 pages, excluding the references) in the ACM Extended Abstracts Submission Template (Word or LaTeX) or as visual artifacts to graspableai@googlegroups.com by the end of January 25th (AoE).
Possible contributions can be included but not limited to:
Theoretical considerations: using TEI theoretical frameworks to analyze, interpret and/or frame explainable AI.
Case studies at any stage: proposed, preliminary, or completed case studies that explore TEI with AI/ML systems.
Prepared data: any physicalizations of data, preparations of data, or data sets.
Methods/approaches: new/adapted methods, design tactics, or approaches to making data more graspable.
Design collections: annotated and visual collections of artifacts, design concepts, critical writing about specific designs or aspects of designs.
Demonstrations/Performances: visual stories, illustrations, physical objects and videos (e.g. dance or music performances, short movies, animations) which visualize or perform the concept of Grapable AI, or whose graspability is relevant to the studio topic.
Important Dates:
Submission deadline: January 25th, 2022
Notification of acceptance: by February 7th, 2022
Workshop date (virtual): February 13th, 2022
