"What else can get you to 3000mm equivalent field of view? A Nikon D500 coupled with an 800mm f/5.6 lens and a 2x teleconverter will weigh close to 6 kilos, cost you a little under $20K, and will only give you a 2400mm f/11 equivalent setup. To properly stabilize the gear, you will need a high-end tripod and a head, which will cost another $1K+ on top of that. And it won’t be sharp at f/11, so you will need to stop it down to at least f/13 to get anything “usable” at pixel level. That’s a lot of money to pay for a monstrous configuration that provides questionable results. In comparison, the Nikon Coolpix P1000 goes for under $1K and weighs mere 1.4 kilos." from PhotographyLife

First of its kind

Nikon’s brand new COOLPIX P1000 boasts an optical zoom that far exceeds its predecessor. With a 125x zoom, the longest superzoom camera currently available, the P1000 is undoubtedly a record-setter.
The camera features a 16-megapixel and 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, which includes an ISO range of 100-6400, can capture images in RAW format (which wasn’t previously available in the P900). The P1000 is capable of capturing 4K video at 30fps, and, and includes an external mic input and a clean HDMI output. The unit, which comes in a 3 pounds and 2 ounces and measures 7.2 inches long.

First of its kind

“The Coolpix P1000 is the first of its kind for a compact digital camera,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc., in a statement. “It raises the bar for superzoom cameras and is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative tools that offer creative freedom to capture and allow users to share their unique visions of the world.....”

Nikkor lens

The Nikkor lens, which allows for super-telephoto shooting at a 3,000mm equivalent, starts at f/2.8 and reaches to f/8. According to Nikon, the improved superzoom lens is ideal for “super-telephoto photography, supporting full-scale photography and demonstrating its full power with subjects and scenes that previously could not be captured, including wild birds and celestial bodies.”

Up to 12,000 mm!

If you’re looking for more than a 3,000mm option, you can opt to use the Dynamic Fine Zoom and you’ll get the benefit of a 6,000mm equivalent. Dial down the image quality and activate the digital zoom and you’ll get 12,000mm. Yes, you read that correctly.

Nature & Space

Nature and space photographers, this is for you, and Nikon has even included bird watching and moon shooting modes in its dial for those exact purposes.

Mind-blowing

Mind-blowing 3000mm zoom. 4K Ultra HD video. RAW (NRW), macro, time-lapse and so much more.Imagine being able to zoom far beyond the reach of standard telephoto lenses, to capture not just the moon, but the craters, peaks and valleys of its surface. Imagine being able to view the International Space Station in flight, even the rings of Saturn—not with a telescope, but with a one-of-a-kind Nikon camera. Introducing the COOLPIX P1000, the most extreme zoom Nikon ever, and a game-changer for birders, sports and wildlife enthusiasts, travel photographers and even those aspiring to venture to the moon and beyond without leaving their backyard.

Rock-steady stabilization

When shooting with extreme zoom power, tiny camera movements are amplified. The Coolpix P1000 uses a Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction system to stabilize both horizontal and vertical movements.

4K Ultra HD video

Harness the flexibility of the COOLPIX P1000's incredible lens and high quality image sensor to create amazing video content in 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 at 30p) with true stereo sound. For greater control of your videos, manual mode allows you to adjust focus, exposure and more during recording.

Production-ready

When it comes to videos, the COOLPIX P1000 won’t leave you wanting. It includes an HDMI port for recording and playback to an external monitor, a microphone jack for optimal sound capture, and a hot-shoe for mounting even more filmmaking accessories.

Warp time

Create extraordinary fast-motion footage with the COOLPIX P1000’s time-lapse and superlapse recording modes. Time-lapse combines still images shot at customizable intervals into a 10 second video, while the Superlapse feature can capture video at speeds of 2x, 4x, 10x, 20x, and 30x.

Optical ingenuity

The Coolpix P1000’s miraculously compact lens design puts the power of a massive professional super telephoto lens into a compact bridge zoom camera design along with convenient external control features like a smooth focus control ring, snapback subject acquisition checking and AF/MF switching; and some of NIKKOR’s most advanced lens technologies.

Control ring

The COOLPIX P1000’s smooth operating control ring provides next-level operation, enabling you to intuitively adjust focus in MF mode or exposure, white balance or ISO in AF mode right from the lens barrel without having to look away from the viewfinder.

Snapback button

With the press of a button, the COOLPIX P1000 zooms out so you can easily recapture distant subjects that may have moved out of frame. Release it and your focal length snaps right back to where it was. Versatility that ignites creativity

Reveal hidden worlds

Use the extreme zoom power of the COOLPIX P1000 on close subjects for macro photography and reveal the smallest details. Focus as close as 1 ft. from your subject.

Dusk until dawn

The COOLPIX P1000's fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, backside-illuminated image sensor, high ISO capability, and EXPEED 4 image-processing power through low light situations.

Electric viewfinder

CMOS

Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, one of the two main types of image sensors used in digital cameras. The Nikon COOLPIX CMOS image sensor with a backside illumination structure increases the amount of light that each pixel receives. The resulting improvement in noise and sensitivity reduction makes the select COOLPIX cameras more capable when shooting night scenes or in dark indoor situations.

Clear Color Display

This innovative technology improves screen visibility for a more vivid, clear image when taking and sharing pictures. Reflections are minimized while contrast and power savings are improved. (In select COOLPIX models).

Easy Auto Mode

Nikon COOLPIX cameras are so smart they know what kind of picture you're taking and can automatically select from six commonly used scene modes, eliminating the mode-setting procedure and streamlining the shooting process.

Target Finding AF

Select COOLPIX digital cameras utilize the Target Finding AF feature which instantaneously assesses the intended subject and automatically adjusts the AF area according to its size to assure clearly focused images.

Subject Tracking

COOLPIX cameras and select D-SLRs in Live View mode, maintain focus on a moving subject using a contrast detection system, which is based on the principle that objects in a scene that are in focus display the highest contrast.

Wi-Fi

Refers to wireless technology and wireless communication. In photography, it's most commonly the wireless transmission of images directly from a camera to a computer in order to achieve a swifter workflow.

Dynamic Fine Zoom

Dynamic Fine Zoom is a new feature available on select Nikon COOLPIX digital cameras that extends the zoom range electronically 2x with minimal image degradation.
