'Grant us the Sun'

Join us in community to celebrate teaching and learning on May 15!

Educators of color cite the importance of affinity spaces where there is dedicated time and space to talk and be in community as they come together and support each other in Predominately White Institutions (PWI) like Cal Poly SLO.

Join us -- BIPOC students, alumni, faculty/staff -- in sharing stories around moments of joy in learning, and reflect in ways that teachers, and educators at large (including family members) have shaped our learning trajectories to date.

This spring ‘Kitchen-Table Conversation’ organized by the School of Education in partnership with Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC) is a step toward our collective goals in pursuit of social justice. Our goal is to connect with students of color who may be interested in the field of education, center the stories that have brought us together at Cal Poly, and discuss pathways into teaching.

Monday May 15, 2023, 5:30-7:30 pm (Bldg 52-E03).-Event has now passed. Thank you to almost 40 educators (future & current ones) who came in community!

RSVP for catering headcount.

*'Grant us the Sun' is borrowed from an original article by Jessica Lee Stovall and Tara R. Sullivan, in Kappan. In their article, a Black educator shared the following: "That’s all Black teachers want. We want to smile in the sun, knowing that our babies are learning, they are loved, and they are getting taken care of. Grant us that. Grant us the sun."  This community celebration has been inspired by this article authored by Stovall and Sullivan.
