Hi everyone,
Â
My name is Professor Granillo, or Prof. G. (she/her/). I’m very excited to work with you this semester! 😊
Â
Here’s some things I’d like you to know about our class and our campus.
Â
Â
We will meet online through the asynchronous (100% online)
module beginning February 5th. While there are no assigned Zoom meetings, there are due dates and time frames by which you need to complete readings, assignments, discussions and the like.
We will meet in person in  Juniper 801 at 9:35am-11am / 11:10am – 12:35 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning February 5th.
While most things are accessible through mobile apps and tablets, the best way to experience the class is through your laptop or a computer.
Â
You will use the MODULES tab to find lectures, required readings, and assignments portals.Â
To navigate through the models without missing a thing, click the NEXT button on the bottom right-hand corner.Â
Â
Â
Each week, there will be a new focus or goal that will help you build a skill toward your quests (essays).
Â
Lecture, readings, and other information will be made prior to engaging in class discussions, reading logs, and essays in case you have questions. To access them, visit Canvas Modules.
Â
Â
Part of reading and writing means to collaborate and be in conversation with others––not just ourselves and the texts. So, yes, there will be some assignments where you will collaborate with your peers.
Passport to English 101 is a self-paced, online workshop that prepares all LAPC students for success in English 101.Â
I encourage you to take it prior to our start date, Februay 5th/6th.
Our embedded tutor for this semester Frederick Hernandez.Â
The CET is also dedicated to helping you improve your reading and writing skills this summer!Â
Students gain proficiency in reading and writing through application of the principles of rhetoric and the techniques of critical thinking. A formal research paper is required. An understanding of the elements of
grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure is crucial to successful completion of English 101. English 101 is required for AA and GE/transfer completion. Placement Advisory: ENGLISH 28 or appropriate placement per AB 705.
1. Analyze rhetorical and thematic elements of college-level fiction and non-fiction by composing critical analyses, including a research paper, with clear thesis statements and specific, relevant support.Â
2. Compose unified, coherent essays, including a research paper, with minimal errors in Standard English grammar, mechanics, and MLA format.
