Simplified Version · S.219bis
Grand galop chromatique in E-flat major, S.219 is a bravura piece by Franz Liszt, composed in 1838. This galop was one of Liszt's favorite encores which he considered a "rouser" (Gibbs & Gooley, 2010). The galop chromatique was published as a piano solo and also in a version for piano duet (S.616).
The galop features various technical difficulties, one of the most significant being the sixteenth-note jumps played by the right hand. Other technical difficulties include rapid chromatic scales and sixteenth-note jumps in the left hand.
The simplified version, S.219bis, is tranposed into E major and significantly shorter (~2m) compared to the origianl (~4m). It is technically less demanding and features shortened passages as well. The piece also has a much shorter end, eliminating much of the original.
The galop is simplified to eliminate the use of the weaker ring and pinky fingers in the right hand whilst playing the chromatic passages. The first trio features the same "brilliante" passage from the original, albeit without the left hand leaps. The 2nd trio features one of Liszt's earlier compositions, Galop de Bal (S.220), and the finale is varied slightly from the original composition, and much shorter.
This piece is featured in a recording by pianist Goran Filipec.
