When I was studying at Madras Christian College, why is it that the Japanese film we watched as part of our curriculum more than two decades ago, keeps coming back to me now, while working with Gramadeep Trust in Kovvali village in Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh?! Many years later, when I visited my college again in February 2024, why did I feel such deep gratitude toward my professors for teaching us films like that?
Madras Christian College is, in fact, a school where Nature herself is the teacher. The two years I spent on that campus were like a kind of meditation living truly amidst nature. Deer peeping into our hostel-Martin Hall windows, our hands offering them chips and making friends with them, the giant bats that looked bigger even than eagles hanging from treetops, the foreign researchers who came to study them, our morning and evening walks along forested paths lined with century-old trees; these were life lessons no book could ever give. The 365-acre campus, Asia’s largest scrub jungle, with hundreds of years old trees and wild landscapes… all of it offered lessons far greater than any film.
During my M.A. (political science) days at Madras Christian College, we were shown a Japanese film titled “Dreams”, and its final episode, “The Village of the Water Mills,” left a deep and lasting impact on my life and thinking. That village, its beautiful ponds, crystal clear canals, natural abundance, and a sustainable life powered by water mills and windmills, deeply moves an outsider who arrives there unexpectedly. In that village, people live healthily and joyfully for more than a hundred years, celebrating even death as a festival. Together, these images conveyed a profound message: When human beings live in harmony with nature, life becomes beautiful, long, and truly rich. That village is not a fantasy; it is a mirror showing us what our future could be.
The episodes that come before it in “Dreams,” however, are stark and harsh, depicting deforestation, nuclear disasters, environmental destruction, and the consequences of human greed in terrifying ways. They reflect the devastation created by humanity, and at the end, the ideal village becomes a warning. The final episode, “The Village of the Water Mills,” offers an alternative path: “If humans protect nature, nature will protect humans.” That message, as students, sank deeply into us.
Now, every day, as I work with Gramadeep Trust to protect and restore the hundreds of acres of ponds in Kovvali village through legal battles, one truth becomes clearer and clearer: A village with water lives. A village without water fades into history. That is the lesson “The Village of the Water Mills” taught us. Without water, natural resources, and sustainable living, neither our villages nor we ourselves will have a future. And whenever I imagine such an ideal village, the desire grows stronger, will our own villages ever shine with such abundant resources and sustainable life in reality?
When I met my professors at Madras Christian College again after many years, in February 2024, the words I told them with heartfelt gratitude were: “Thank you for showing us Dreams - The Village of the Water Mills as part of our curriculum… even today, that film guides every step I take.”
The same campus where people from Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to Indra Nooyi, Gemini Ganesan to actor Nasser, and from our own AP state, Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya to Sir C.R. Reddy, Foreign Secretary K. P. S. Menon, T. N. Seshan, Communist Party leader Prakash Karat, and former Union Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan once studied, walking on that very soil again reminded me that the values I learned there, the films we watched, and the nature we experienced all echo deeply in every initiative Gramadeep Trust is working on today.
Restoring ponds, protecting the environment, preserving biodiversity, these are not just tasks. They are a way of life. And it was that way of life that a college taught us, with lessons like “The Village of the Water Mills.”

My First Published Writing… My Present-Day Reality!
Those who are entrusted with the responsibility of protecting people’s rights, safeguarding public lands, and preserving social unity, the very public representatives elected by the people, are today becoming the cause of society’s destruction.
In 2004, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat honored me with the first prize for my four-and-a-half-page essay titled “Sorry State of Play.” The essay was published in a special commemorative book released by them. It was not only a great honor but remains, even today, a mirror reflecting the continuing decline of democratic institutions.
In December 2003, on the occasion of the 200th Session of the Rajya Sabha, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat organized a seminar in Delhi on “The Role and Importance of the Rajya Sabha in the Indian Constitution.” At the last minute, I got an opportunity to participate in that seminar. At the time, I was pursuing my M.Phil. at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. The seminar was attended by experienced parliamentarians who had served for decades, students from IITs, IIMs, and Central Universities across the country, as well as eminent intellectuals.
After listening to speeches by distinguished personalities such as former Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and journalist Kuldip Nayar, the then Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Najma Heptulla, addressed the youth during the concluding session with a series of introspective questions. She emphasized that youth are the future of the nation and that they were included in the seminar because of their important role in safeguarding democracy. With deep emotion, she invited us to send our responses in the form of essays to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and announced awards for the best entries.
“Why do young people stay away from politics? Why do they dislike political leaders? Why are they unwilling to take responsibility for the nation? What message would you like to give us?”
These questions from Najma Heptulla awakened a new perspective within me. They gave me an opportunity to transform the silent anguish, disappointment, and pain buried deep in my heart into words. The essay I wrote in response won the first prize, while the second prize went to a student from IIT Bombay.
During the special publication released to commemorate the 200th Session of the Rajya Sabha, my essay- recognized as the best contribution from a university student, was published alongside writings by eminent personalities such as Vice President Shekhawat, former Chief Justice Ranganath Misra, former Union Ministers Madhu Dandavate and Shiv Shankar, legal scholar L.M. Singhvi, and journalist Kuldip Nayar. For me, as a university student, finding a place among such distinguished voices gave me immense confidence. It became my very first official publication.
Now, after all these years, through the “Gramadeep Trust” that I founded for rural development, environmental protection, and community empowerment, I continue to witness the same reality. The emotions I felt back then and the realities I confront today tell the very same story:
The very political leaders who should be building unity are instead creating divisions. In the name of caste and religion, they deepen social fractures for personal gain. Those who are supposed to protect public assets, government lands, lakes, and ponds are colluding with officials to manipulate revenue records and support illegal activities. The very public representatives elected to make laws on behalf of the people are often the first to violate the constitutional laws enacted in those legislative bodies.
As citizens, we must remain vigilant against such forces. Beyond politics and caste divisions, we ourselves must move forward with unity, respecting the law and working collectively for meaningful change.

“Before Being Introduced as the Founder of Gramadeep Trust…”
While pursuing my Ph.D. at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, with a case study on the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers and on how militancy and international networks sustain terrorism, a major turning point in my journey came in 2005 when I began my first job with the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
My responsibilities included conducting research, analysis, and preparing reports on national security, international relations, and especially the security policies between neighboring countries. During this period, I became part of a special team constituted by the Central Government under the leadership of M. K. Rasgotra, IFS, a member of the National Security Advisory Board and former Foreign Secretary of India. In that team, alongside distinguished personalities such as Admiral K. K. Nayyar and Army General Deependra Singh, Commander-in-Chief of the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force), I had the opportunity to contribute to the formulation of Indo–Sri Lankan foreign policy perspectives.
During the interview process for this fellowship in 2005, Admiral Nayyar asked me, “How do you envision your future?” I replied, “I see my future as a voluntary social worker dedicated to rural development.” Despite my answer, he selected me. In the strategic discussions led by Rasgotra ji, my analyses were well appreciated and encouraged. Admiral K. K. Nayyar, like a father figure, often told me that I had a promising future in international affairs, that my abilities had drawn the attention of influential people, and that many opportunities would come my way if I continued in that field. But my heart was moving in a different direction.
Driven by a deep desire to work directly with people in rural areas and by the confidence that meaningful change must begin at the grassroots, I left Delhi in January 2006 and returned to Kovvali village with the determination to establish a voluntary organization. Since the environment was not yet conducive, I later rejoined the Defence sector, completed my Ph.D. at JNU, and earned my doctorate in 2010. Even after I permanently left Delhi and returned to Kovvali around 2009–10, Admiral Nayyar continued to call me, urging me to return because there were promising opportunities waiting for me. But I never went back. In 2011–12, seeking deeper understanding and practical exposure, I worked with the National Institute of Rural Development, where I gained valuable knowledge and experience.
However, it was only after I began working full-time in villages through the establishment of Gramadeep Trust in 2015 that I clearly realized a profound truth: the real enemies of our nation are not merely at the borders, but within our villages themselves.
I witnessed how forces wearing different masks, political affiliations, caste identities, bureaucratic authority, and networks of influence, work together with vested interests to divide people and capture public resources. I saw how these mafias dominate villages by manipulating ordinary people, political systems, caste loyalties, and official machinery for their selfish gain. It became painfully clear to me that these are the true enemies of the nation. Their networks are, in many ways, more complex and dangerous than international terrorist networks.
Government lands, lakes, canals, ponds, forests, hills, soil, sand, nothing is spared. These ruthless forces are pushing villages toward destruction, preventing genuine national development, and swallowing public resources for private profit. The flags of political parties, caste identities, and the colors of power have become merely weapons to sustain these mafias. The larger national spirit, the sense that “we are Indians,” that “our village, our people, and our sustainable future matter”, has been lost.
Those who destroy the nation from within, exploiting its resources for personal benefit, are no less than traitors to the country. More than external threats or border security challenges, it is urgently necessary to focus on these internal enemies who are looting our villages and resources, leaving future generations without a future at all. Patriotism is not limited to protecting the nation’s borders; it also means protecting the country’s resources, society, and collective future.

4. Lessons from the Forest: My First Field Study as a Political Science Student at Madras Christian College
Even though more than two decades have passed, the memories of my days as an M.A. (Political Science) student at Madras Christian College still feel as fresh as if they happened just yesterday. Among them, the journey we took for our very first field study, barely a month or two after classes began, it remains unforgettable for a lifetime.
We travelled overnight from Madras to Mettupalayam by train, and from there, took the toy train to Ooty, enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the Nilgiri hills during the five-hour journey. After another hour’s bus ride from Ooty, we reached Gudalur. From there, the college took us to a tribal village deep inside the forest. Our aim was to study the political, social, and economic conditions of tribal communities like the Kattunayakan, who live in the forest region bordering Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala states.
We were given accommodation for few days at a small community health centre. For the girls and our female lecturer, they temporarily converted the operation theatre into a living space; the large general ward hall was allotted to the male students and professors and also served as our common dining area. Apart from that building, all we could see around us were valleys, tea plantations, and greenery! It felt like a completely new world.
Every day, we travelled by jeep along the winding hill roads, studying the lifestyle, economic condition, social structure, and political awareness of the tribal people. The marks left behind by a herd of elephants that had caused damage in the village just the day before were clearly visible. We were told that it wasn’t just human-elephant conflict; some tribal groups there even killed humans. Knowing this that such lifestyle exists in that calm and silent forests left us a little startled even before entering there.
As part of the study, when we asked the tribal people, “Who is the Prime Minister of the country now?” they answered without any doubt, “Nehru.” That incident filled us with both surprise and sadness. It was then that we realized that such communities still existed, living far away from the flow of time, at the borders of three states. After the week concluded, we returned to the college and each of us presented our findings on the topics assigned to us. The report our class prepared was submitted to the Tamil Nadu government on behalf of the college; their appreciation of our observations felt like a beautiful ending to that journey.
That journey from two and decades ago did more than nurture my academic curiosity; it opened my eyes for the first time to many unseen and unknown realities of our society. That is exactly what the study of social sciences should evoke! But in many arts colleges, the way social sciences are being approached today is completely different, and deeply worrying.
