The Graduate School of Silpakorn University was set up in 1973 in compliance with a University proposal for the establishment of an Institute of Archaeology and a Graduate School The University took this important step also because of the recommendation by the National Board of Education back in 1971 that the Faculty of Archaeology should embark on courses at graduate levels. The University itself saw the need of a Graduate School functioning as a central administrative unit and coordinating courses at a higher level. At the time of its conception the Graduate School was given a definite role to formulate plans, implement policies, impose stringent academic standards, promote research, coordinate schemes, and render support to all the departments involved in offering graduate programs. One of its many responsibilities was to oversee the assessment and evaluation of graduate works with a view to raising all fields of study to the same high standard. The proposal was officially granted approval of September 28, 1972, and the Graduate School inaugurated its teaching in the following year in three fields: Historical Archaeology and Ancient Oriental Languages and Epigraphy (later – Thai Epigraphy) at the Master’s level, and Thai Architecture at the graduate diploma’ level. At present, the Graduate School offers courses in 37 programs at the master’s level and 4 level and 4 programs at the doctoral level.
