We are Grads Gone Rogue! What started as a blog from two PhD students, Mary and Katrina, juggling the intricate balance between learning, life, and adventure, has grown into a science communication media site.
We hope to use this platform as a place to foster a healthy love for science and life.

GGR stands for “grads gone rogue”, a name that Katrina and I coined for our blog about life as a graduate student in STEM. Instead of dreaming about quitting and opening a bakery, like most senior graduate students, we dreamt of going rogue and embarking on the adventure of "van life". Of course that never happened and we stuck it out to get those coveted letters at the end of our name.
While completing my doctorate and planning for a career afterward, I found great interest in science communication. I started joining platforms, learning the trade a bit, and seeking out opportunities to build my resume. I noticed there are a lot of platforms providing scientific updates of the latest and greatest technologies, but what seems to be lacking is access to the realities of scientific work and what we actually discuss day-to-day.
So I decided to build upon our what we started and give GGR a newfound direction. Even more so, I saw this as an opportunity to provide a community for others in my position. GGR is an informal collective. The purpose of our platform is not only to share a vast array of scientific updates but to also provide a place for those excited about science and are interested in building their science writing and illustration portfolios.
What I envision for the GGR team is that whether you are just starting out or are a practiced science communicator, this will always be a space to build your science communication skills; to find what writing style works for you; to explore topics you may not otherwise spend the time reading about; to get others just as interested in science as we are.
