Hindustan ka dil dekho!!

Central India- As a part of our exploratory journey we were introduced to the folk music from Uttar Pradesh, Gondh Art from Madhya Pradesh, the famous Indori Poha and folk dance from Madhya Pradesh.

Gond Art by Narinder Kaur

Gond paintings are done by the 'Gond tribe' of Madhya Pradesh but are also common in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and parts of Maharashtra. Gond people make these paintings on the walls and floors of their houses and they believe that a good image begets good luck. During the session students choose from the given templates based on their expertise while Narinder ma'am guided them about the finer details. Here is a snippet of the session along with the students' art work.

Folk Music with Theophilus Benjamin

Music is an integral part of life and almost every region in India has it's own Folk music which lends from the culture and traditions of that area. In this session we discussed about Pandavi, a folk music popular in most parts of Central India and is believed to be as old as the Hindu epic Mahabharata. We then delved deeper into the Uttrakhandi music, discussing instruments like Daur, Thali, Ransingha, Dholki etc and ended the session by singing "Kaise khele jaiyo sawan mei kajaria."
