Senior high school (SHS) is the last two years of the K to 12 basic education program in the Philippines. It is a period of transition from adolescence to adulthood, and it is a time for students to explore their interests, develop their skills, and prepare for their future.
The K to 12 curriculum was created to address the following concerns:
The mismatch between the skills of graduates from the basic education system and the demands of the labor market.
The high number of students who drop out of school before completing high school.
The lack of opportunities for students to develop their talents and skills in the arts, sports, and other areas.
Provide students with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to be successful in college, career, and life.
Help students develop their talents and interests.
Prepare students for the demands of the 21st century workforce.
Promote lifelong learning.
In the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum under the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines, students have the opportunity to choose from various curriculum exits, each tailored to their individual goals and aspirations. These curriculum exits encompass the following options:
1. Higher Education: This exit option is designed for students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree or higher education after completing senior high school. By following the Academic Track, specifically the strands like STEM, ABM, HUMSS, or GAS, students acquire the necessary academic knowledge and skills to excel in university or college. The rigorous curriculum prepares them for college entrance exams and equips them with a strong foundation for future academic pursuits.
2. Middle-Level Skills Development: For students who wish to acquire specialized technical or vocational skills, the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track offers an ideal pathway. This exit option prepares students for careers that require specific competencies, such as automotive technology, culinary arts, electrical installation, and computer programming. Graduates of the TVL Track can enter the workforce with relevant skills and qualifications, contributing to industries that rely on a skilled workforce.
3. Entrepreneurship: The SHS curriculum also promotes entrepreneurship by providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to start and manage their own businesses. Entrepreneurship subjects, as well as practical experiences like Work Immersion, enable students to understand business principles, financial management, marketing, and business planning. This exit option empowers graduates to become successful entrepreneurs or business professionals in various sectors.
4. Employment: Some students may opt to enter the workforce directly after completing senior high school. The SHS curriculum, through its Work Immersion component and specialized subjects, helps students develop essential employability skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and workplace ethics. This exit option is suitable for students who are ready to embark on their careers immediately and gain practical experience in their chosen fields.
The flexibility of the DepEd K-12 curriculum allows students to align their education with their career aspirations. These curriculum exits recognize that not all students follow the same path, and they provide diverse opportunities for students to thrive and succeed in higher education, skilled trades, entrepreneurship, or the workforce. By offering these varied options, the DepEd curriculum empowers students to make informed decisions about their future and contribute meaningfully to society in their chosen fields.
