Interests and Miscellaneous
I enjoy math riddles and puzzles. At UCSD, I sent the math grad students a biweekly email reminding them about Banach Barski (happy hour) and I usually include a riddle/puzzle. There is a long tradition of having fun Banach emails each week.
I enjoy lots of different types of games, including card games, board games, and puzzle and management/idle video games. I've been enjoying sudoku variants, such as the ones appearing on Cracking the Cryptic.
I've also always had fun with sports. At various points in my life, and at various levels of competitiveness, I've played soccer, (ice) hockey, rugby, football, softball, baseball, ultimate frisbee, and spikeball. I cheer for the Cowboys (NFL), Blue Jays (MLB), Padres (MLB), and Senators (NHL).
I love tasting and making new foods and drinks. Last year I learned how to make sourdough bread from scratch (modulo making my own starter). I also recently learned about hatch chiles and red/green sauces, which are New Mexican delicacies.
I grew up in Canada in a military family and have lived in Victoria, BC; Waterloo, ON; Toronto, ON; Kingston, ON; Ottawa, ON; Halifax, NS; Oakland, CA; San Diego, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Oxford, UK.
I have visited (i.e., been in for a purpose other than traveling through) the following provinces, states, and countries: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, California, Washington DC, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, New Mexico, Texas, Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, England, Germany, Norway, and Czechia.
