Dr Giuseppe Paparella, FRHistS is a Lecturer in East Asian Security at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. Before joining King’s in September 2025, he held research fellowships at the University of Oxford (Saïd Business School, 2025 and Rothermere American Institute, 2022), the London School of Economics and Political Science (Department of International History, 2024-25), William & Mary (Global Research Institute and Department of History, 2022-24), and George Washington University (Institute for Security and Conflict Studies, 2021-22).

Dr Paparella is an expert on US foreign policy in East Asia, historical international relations, and East Asian security. His first monograph – Abiding Influence: Presidents, Nationalist Beliefs and US Policy in the Asia Pacific, 1898-1972 – was published with Stanford University Press, Studies in Asian Security, in November 2025. His interdisciplinary research on these and other relevant topics has been published in the Journal of Applied History, National Identities, Journal of Transatlantic Studies, International History Review, Journal of American-East Asian Relations, US Army War College Press, The Diplomat, and others. He has received support from the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, Royal Historical Society, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, Herbert Hoover Presidential Foundation, European Association for American Studies, British American Nineteenth Century Historians.

Previously, he worked in public and global health policy at the University of Oxford (2016-21) and Picker Institute (2014-16). During this time, he contributed to several national and international research projects and peer-reviewed outputs which, among others, appeared in California Management Review, The Lancet Infectious Diseases and Cambridge University Press.

Dr Paparella obtained a PhD in Security Studies from King’s College London (2021), a MSc in International Relations from LSE (2012) as well as academic degrees in International Relations in Italy (Bologna and Bari). Dr Paparella has experience in and he is available for research consultation and advising. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in May 2026.
