Various early postcards featuring Governors Bay
In May 1960 a 9.8 earthquake in Chile (the largest ever recorded) created a tsunami which reached New Zealand and swept up Lyttelton Harbour in a series of waves some as high as 3 metres. It flooded the flat ground of Teddington and Allandale, drowning some sheep and flooding Allandale Hall. Turner's late summer tomato crop was also wiped out.

Life long residents of Allandale, both born (1876) and died within six weeks of each other. They had nine children. From at least 1929 they lived at what is now known as Taunton Gardens which had been Elizabeths parent's (Thomas and Margaret) home, built from 1852, by Charles Vigers. William's parents were Jane O'Conner & Orton Bradley. When Jane became pregnant she married Robert Harris of Allandale who adopted William. There was another son born to Robert and Jane, known as Henry Robert Harris. He was Lyttelton to Allandale Coach Proprieter and married Annie Firnistan. They ran the post office telephone exchange at Teddington from a cottage up the Gebbies Pass Road near the Blacksmiths.
