Development for a prequel series based on Batman began in September 2013, with Bruno Heller hired by Fox to serve as a writer and executive producer. In March 2014, Fox originally ordered 16 episodes for its first season before expanding it to 22. Filming primarily took place across New York City. In May 2018, Fox renewed the series for a fifth and final season, consisting of 12 episodes, which premiered on January 3, 2019, and concluded on April 25, 2019. A prequel series, Pennyworth, starring Jack Bannon as a younger version of the iteration of Alfred Pennyworth portrayed by Sean Pertwee in Gotham, began airing on Epix in July 2019.[2][3][4]

On September 24, 2013, Fox announced that it had bypassed the traditional pilot and placed an order for Gotham to be written and executive produced by Heller.[53] Gotham received a series order from Fox on May 5, 2014,[54] with the first season reported to consist of 16 episodes rather than the standard 13 or 22.[55] On October 13, Fox ordered an additional six episodes for the show, bringing the first season order to a full 22 episodes.[56] In February 2014, it was reported that production would begin in New York City in March,[57] and filming finished on March 24, 2015, for the first season.[58] On January 17, 2015, the series was renewed for a second season.[59] The show was officially renewed by Fox for a 22-episode third season on March 16, 2016. In May 2017, Fox renewed the series for a fourth season, which premiered on September 21, 2017.[60][61] On May 13, 2018, Fox renewed the series for a fifth and final season originally consisting of 10 episodes then later increased to 12.[62] The season began production in July that year,[63] and premiered on January 3, 2019.[64]

On February 1, 2016, Fox began airing episodes of a five-part motion comic titled Gotham Stories, meant to tie into the series' second season.[147][148] The first Gotham tie-in novel was published by Titan in January 2017. Dawn of Darkness by Jason Starr is described as an "official prequel" to the TV series, set two months prior to the beginning of the series.[149] The following year, another novel was released written by the same author. Entitled City of Monsters, the book centered around Gordon during the events between seasons 2 and 3 of the series.[150]

Last week, casting breakdowns for Gotham's fifth and final season surfaced online, revealing that Bane's father was likely on the way. Now, a new set of episode titles have been spotted by SpoilerTV, teasing the arrival of the back-breaker himself.

Fans of superhero shows based in the DC Comics universe like "The Flash," ''Arrow" and "Gotham" might have to wait a lot longer for past seasons' episodes to come to Netflix and Hulu. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2'); }); Jeff Bewkes, the chief executive of DC-owner Time Warner Inc., told analysts on a conference call Wednesday that the company is considering whether to let online services like Netflix have its shows several years after they first air, rather than one year later. He said that could mean more older episodes are available on-demand to traditional cable customers.Withdrawing shows from online services would make traditional cable and satellite TV packages more attractive. Time Warner is focused on "delivering even more value to consumers, especially those who subscribe to the traditional bundle," Bewkes said. There are eight DC-based shows on TV right now, including newcomer "Supergirl," which launched on CBS last week. You can currently access many of the previous seasons of established DC Comics shows, up until the last season, on Netflix and Hulu.Analyst Anthony DiClemente of Nomura Securities said Time Warner is reacting to the growth of Netflix as a power in the TV industry."Some of the media executives are looking at Netflix as a digital distributor who has gained too much power," he said. "They are thinking, look, maybe we should keep our most valuable content inside the traditional pay TV ecosystem, which is the golden goose."DiClemente speculated that satellite and cable TV providers like DirecTV and Comcast could soon be able to offer back episodes for the entire current season to customers in on-demand libraries, rather than just the most recent five episodes.Time Warner also spooked investors wary that growing numbers of people are skipping a traditional cable subscription. It said U.S. subscribers of its Turner networks such as CNN, TNT and TBS fell a worse-than-expected 1 percent this year, and it expects a similar decline next year. The comments came after Time Warner Inc. reported third-quarter earnings early Wednesday that disappointed investors. While revenue grew 5 percent to $6.6 billion, topping the $6.5 billion expected by analysts polled by FactSet, and adjusted earnings of $1.25 beat predictions of $1.09 per share, its earnings outlook of $5.25 per share for fiscal 2016 fell short of expectations for $5.60.The company blamed foreign exchange headwinds and greater investment in programming for the forecast shortfall.Time Warner shares fell $5.10, or 6.6 percent, to close at $72.20 Wednesday. Its shares have fallen more than 15 percent this year.  2015 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
